Advice on lubricating hydraulic ram

When I store my equipment I always try to store the hydraulics with the ram closed. On my Kubota, I won't be able to do this on the FEL or backhoe. Anyone know of a good product to use on the ram to prevent it from rusting?

use the old fashioned method..... smear it with chassis grease. It is important to get it well covered especially where the ram comes out of the tube.

I've been using lithium grease, cause I have it on hand. I just smear some on with a rag. I've wondered about the o-rings on the rams, I assumed they were to prevent the orange paint from getting into the cylinder. I think that I should slide the o-rings back down to the cylinder so that amy dirt stuck in the greases will get pushed out of the way. Anyone have thoughts on this?

In my 40 years of operating heavy equipment.I have never seen a ram rust. on big backhoes. The oring should go back.

I have seen rams rust many times. It is a matter of the quality of the ram. My Fischer snow plow rams have rusted as well as the rams on my 1964 Minneapolis Moline Backhoe & Loader. Both of these pieces of equipment had rust on the rams before I purchased them, so I have no idea as to how they were stored. Grease is inexpensive, so I can see no reason not to cover them as a precaution.

junkman good idea to cover them.I have never had anything small to look at.My tractor is the smallest thing I have with rams on. Probably got better quality rams on heavy equipment.
