Hi Folks:

I'm thinking of making some sort of bracket to hold barbell type weights on the rear wheels. I'm thinking a simple triangular shaped plate plate with a bar sticking out perpendicular to hang the weights on would be ideal. A couple or three 50-lb weights on each side ought to be good. The price is attractive, they're about $0.20-0.30 per pound (cheaper if you buy them from a person rather than a used fitness goods store).

One question: my rear wheels have six mounting bolts. Would it be better to make the triangular plate such that I take 3 of the bolts out, put the plate on, then put the bolts back in? In this case, the bolts holding the rim to the hub would be maybe a 1/4" or maybe a little more short of the depth they had before. It looks like there's an 1/8" thick washer between the wheel lugs and the rim now, so I could remove that.

OR, would it be a better idea to just drill 3 holes into the rim and mount the triangular plate that way? I would drill outside of where the hub is, but not to where it does into area of the wheel that holds pressurized air, of course. I doubt three 1/2" or so holes would substantially weaken the rim, right?

Dave if it were me I would opt for removing the washers and installing the triangular shaped support. Not keen on drilling any extra holes in any rim. Just be sure that you re-torque the wheel bolts after you reinstall them per your operators manual and I think you'll be good to go.

Dave,
Doesn't the MF 1220 have any accessory holes in the wheels?

Nope...no accessory holes, just the 6 bolt holes for attaching the wheel to the hub.

Does the wheel have flat pressed areas on the disc?

I had to go look. Actually, no. Looks like the wheel is just the cylindrical piece that the tire seats on with a flat round plate welded into the middle of it, in a nutshell. It appears to be a single flat plate without looking too close. Seems like it ought to be alright to just drill 3 or 4 holes in it....

I was hoping that there was some flats for you to drill. I don't think that you would hurt anything by drilling your own holes.

My old fords have lots of extra holes drilled for weights.. no rim failures yet!
