just received an e mail from a trusted friend, waring me about a virus, and how to delete it. the deletion process was to do a search for file jdbgmgr.exe and delete it. before i did anything i checked with symantec and found it was a hoax.it is not a criitical file but if u delete it some java applets may not work properly. MY question is will my computer send it out in e mails to everybody in my address book? i can not get in touch(at this time) with the person that originated the mail to me. is anybody familiar with the e mail in question?

frank,
From what I've seen of that e-mail, you have to manually forward it. No harm done if you didn't.

Frank

So it relies on panic merchants sending it all on to their mates.

Cheers

Frank,

I don't know about the forwarded email you recieved, but I do know that there are several similar hoaxes that are going around. You did the right thing. Whenever you receive any email telling you you need to delete anything, go check it out first. I've gotten to the point where I don't get much of that stuff anymore, because all my friends know I'll bust them if they send through a warning that ends up being a hoax. So, now they check them out themselves first. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

This is a fake virus. The real damge is done when people act on the message and delete the java runtime file.

Glad you didn't follow the email - this is the newest type of virus, employing the well known "Stupid Human Trick" syndrome/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Fortunately, most folks on this board catch on quick.

This <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322993&>link</A> will take you to Microslug's bulletin on the subject. Good Luck.
