Pretty straightforward job... just go slow, keep removed parts well organized, clean things as much as you can (don't drop stuff into cylinders!!).

Check to see if headbolts need to be new ones- many used on diesels are "strecth bolts" which are one-time use only. Be sure to have an accurate torque wrench. Check to see whether there are any other gaskets/replaceable small parts that you'll need, before you start. Also decide if there are any other items that might be a lot easier to replace with the intake/exhaust and head out of the way-- such as the water pump and/or hoses.

You might also wish to have the head checked by a shop to make certain it's not warped or damaged in some way. Good learning experience; wish you smooth sailing.

dave ,besides what irvingj said I took pitcures before and during various stages of tear down. I didn't need em much putting mine back together but it was reassuring to have them. also a manual for proper torque and valve settings.etc. russ

Changing a head gasket is pretty straight forward, a manual to look at for specs is a must.
Take your time, pay attention and you'll do fine.

Oh, and good luck.

Hey, 8ball-- one other thing: as you remove the old head gasket, pay close attention to it; try to determine where --and why-- it was compromised. That will aid in possibly avoiding future problems. Head gaskets fail for a specific reason, they don't generally just "wear out."

Although changing one isn't too bad a job, it gets to be no fun at all if you have to repeat the process right afterward....! (Again, don't ask how I know that....:D:D) And, as Kubota 2350 and 6thgpSF said, make sure you have the correct specs handy.

Good luck- enjoy the experience!

Thanks for the update; sounds like you've nailed down the problem.... was that the exhaust valve? If so, that MIGHT suggest a cooling issue. (You might also consider flushing the cooling system before putting it back to hard use--) Any pics?

I've taken it in for some one to finish up, with the new head and such it'll need a valve job, which is way beyond my ability. No pics though. I also purchased a new radiator earlier as i feel this was the culprite in my original overheating issue, as I was having steam coming from holes in the top of the radiator. The engine was previously rebuilt by the guy i got it from, so thats good, i just wish he would have replaced the radiator or I prolly wouldn't be in this situation i am in now.
