I have a Farmall M with a Horn Draulic loader on it that has a trip bucket. The bucket it approximately 42 inches and I would like to add a hydraulic cylinder to it. I would like to just put a cylinder in the center of the bucket and use a 3 inch diameter one. Will one cylinder this size have enough power to successfully operate the bucket.

Thanks,
Bobg

Yes that's fine.

A 3 in cyl with a 1.5 in shaft at 2000 psi will push 14,000, and pull 10,000 lbs.

Let me add, that there is enough force there to crumple that bucket into a pretzel, if the length of the cylinder and shaft are not figured correctly.

Is this the loader you have?

I agree with J J. I believe those 'trip-dump' buckets were primarily used with manure tines to dump into the spreader! If my farm youth days remember correctly, it was "Trip, Splat, Splatter, and check your shirt!" Using a hydro-cylinder might lure you into doing more than the buckets built for. I'd at least put a piece of 3" channel across the back of the bucket to try to feather-out the cylinder's applied pressure! ~Scotty

JJ.

Here's a picture of the loader that's like mine, it is not mine though. I have the original 42 inch bucket, the loader in the picture has a larger bucket. Hopefully the picture will snow.
I'm planning on hooking the cylinder up the same as the one in the picture.

You don't need but a small diameter cylinder with the length and stroke to fit correctly. As someone suggested, I would beef up the hook up points on the bucket and the bar joining the two sides, with angle iron.

JJ,

Would a 2.5 inch diameter cylinder work? I can get one for about $30 less than the 3 inch.

Yes, that is such a light weight bucket, that just about any cylinder would work. Just get the stroke and and fit up correctly. Don't forget to beef up the bucket mounting plate. Have you measured the distance for full bucket dump?

JJ,

I did a preliminary measurement and it looks like a 20 inch stroke will fit just right. There's a cross member that I can use to weld the bracket to. But, I'm going to remeasure it to make sure. It looks like an 18 inch would be able to make the bucket dump so the bottom is perpendicular to the ground when the bucket is 12 feet in the air. The bucket on the loader now was pretty beat up when I got it, so I'm planning on rebuilding it.

Thanks for all the help.

You're just adding a dumping cylinder, not a lifting one, so I'd go with something like a 1.5 x 20 cylinder at 3000 psi and $130.
