Aerator with true vertical action?

As long as the tines roll, they won't follow vertical path in the soil. All tines rotating/rolling on/in the soil will tear the soil. To reduce the tear amount, the diameter of circular motion of the tine around itself should be as small as possible. This means you will use shorter aerator tines which are not wanted. I can think of another method, somethings like a tens of small post hole diggers. Such a machine can be very simple. Just use some chain-chain gear systems or belt-pulley systems to distribute the pto power to small drills mounted on a beam. They will drill the soil exactly vertical or in any angle you want.

Here you go, Keeney. I imagine this thing isn't cheap, but it fits your specs: Soil Reliever

Even the smallest unit is a bit big for our 4100/4110s. Also, you can only operate at about 1 MPH. All of the other true "vertical" aerators that I have seen out there are for "fine" turf, e.g. golf course greens and bowling lawns. Also, keep in mind that the aerovator deliberately disturbs the soil surface as much as most well-designed core aerators. In fact, I think one of their selling points is that it does distrupt the surface in an agressive manner when the PTO is on and simply pokes holes when the PTO is off.
