Core. By a whole bunch. Spiking actually compacts the soil lining the "poked" hole. (not removing any dirt, just smashing it down) Coring removes soil while relieving compaction. Turf roots will fill the holes in a couple of weeks as they migrate to the oxygen and water the holes provide.
