It certainly shouldn't. I think I've read on the forum that some of our members pick up the mower with the 3-point when turning, but I never did, and when mowing and leaving square corners, I frequently swung around in 270 degree turns. Several times I even ran with the "cruise" set and used brake steering to turn those 270s really tight just to see how it worked, and never broke anything on either brush hog. However, a son-in-law once mowed my pasture at a high rate of speed with the B7100 and a 4' Bush Hog and found it very rough riding. At some point, he broke a weld on the tail wheel bracket, and finished mowing without knowing it had broken. It really wasn't a problem for me; just re-welded it. But in order to break it, he had also bounced enough that he rubbed a big blister on his rump. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Not all, but most of the time, when you buy used, especially from an individual, you have no warranty. At least I never expect any. Unless there was some kind of actual fraud involved, I'm afraid it's your responsibility.

I lift it when turning really hard, as it stresses the 3ph components, and I usually have it on my old Ferguson and don't want to break anything. It should not break the wheel. Sorry about your bad luck, but you will get it fixed, and then it will work reliably.

Sorry for your troubles. You really should have walked the pasture carefully before mowing. Of course you can't find every rock!

I never raise my tail wheel when making turns. Keep in mind, however, that even at a fast walking speed, that the tail wheel really swings around like a whip cracker because it's way out there on the end of a long implement. So try to make your turns as gradual as you can.

If the the broken tail wheel was not due to a previous repair, that's 1 thing. But that broken weld is another. If the owner didn't tell you about it, you should try to get him to pay for it. Maybe go for both, but settle on the bracket repair. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The guy I bought the stuff from is a good guy, so I will give him a call and see what he says. If he surprises me and says that it's not his problem, then I will accept that with no hard feelings and take your advice and just get used to it. While that repair weld is something that he probably should have pointed out, it is as I mentioned in a previous post just as much something I should have noticed when I looked the tractor over.

You may be surprised at the help some people give in this situation.

Ask him if he has an extra tail wheel or knows someone/somewhere that does. He might be able to put you onto something affordable.

Most operators know somebody with an old or defunct piece of equipment (broken gearbox, etc) that isn't worth their fixing it up. Can usually get pieces cheap or for nothing.

Good luck, and look around.

I had a similiar situation once with used equipement. Basically these kind of sales are AS-IS. It wouldn't hurt to call the seller up and ask to split the cost, and if he says no, you are no worse off!!!

Glad to hear that for the most part the mowing went OK.

I might call the guy and let him know what happened and see if he offered to help but I wouldn't even ask if he didn't offer. I'm assuming you're each adults here and this was an 'arms length' transaction. It's yours and it broke. You can fix it or not.

I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh, but it's truly the way I feel and I probably buy as much used equipment as most anyone on TBN.

Sorry about the tail wheel and bracket.

here's my take.

The tail wheel was one of those thing that happen.. might happen today.. might happen in ten years.

Also.. I've seen tail wheels and hubs at TSC much much cheaper than you mention.. on the shelf.. looks like you could have got one and fixed it much cheaper that way... ( might just be more money where you are? )

The bracket being cracked? well again.. it was repaired.. and welds usually die right where the weld was. Probably wasn't a good repair .. It might have been better to gusset up the area.. or weld some flat onto it.. even flat and angle to it to cover the damaged area, and let the new metal take the stress. I've seen lots of tractors repaired that way.. strenght and life of the repair are about 50/50 dependent on the material used to make the repair, and the skill of the welder.

Good luck

too bad no tractor junk yards in the area to grab a wheel from..

If it was me... I'd just let it go and not even bother calling the guy. As someone else pointed out AS IS and the proverbial, Let the Buyer Beware. No it can't hurt to call, but it was repaired, probably by the person you bought it from so he was very aware. One would like to think he felt comfortable about the repair being a quality repair which may be why he probably didn't say anything. I've experieinced the cockeyed bush hog wheel, but learned to keep it lubricated /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.... gee that's why they put that zerk fitting there /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I actually get more damage from the front tires (3 rib) than I do with the bush hog wheel. You've got some good advice on the repair from guys here, and you now know what won't stand up. Good luck with the repair.
