Aftermarket air intakes.

What do you guys think about these aftermarket air intake systems for trucks and cars? K&N advertises them heavily but there are lots of manufacturers. They make widely varying claims about horsepower gains.

I'm skeptical and the things are quite expensive. My gut feeling is that they are mostly for show and feed that 'bolt-on' mod insanity that most of us have probably fallen for before.

Any true believers? Would you spend $300 for 8 hp?

These guys used to sell snake oil until they found that guys with expensive cars would pay $300+ for a "claimed" increase of 8 hp. Some of these air cleaners (air intake system is just the fancy name) are better air cleaners than the cheap air cleaners that come stock on the car. That is certainly true for K & N filters. The other other fancy stuff that comes along with the air cleaner is snake oil.
