I need a new starter assembly for my old mower. Bendix spring is shot, ditto solenoid.
Anyone have suggestions and good review for aftermarket or rebuilds?
thanks

It seems unusual that you would have two failures at the same time. What happens when you connect the battery positive terminal to the stud coming out of the starter, not the solenoid?

starter spins, gear doesn't rise up to engage.

OK now we are getting somewhere.

Try this next, jumper the battery positive to the large terminal on the starter solenoid, then use a smaller wire to connect the small terminal on the solenoid to the positive wire connected to the large terminal of the solenoid.

Lets see what happens.

So based on your investigation, I would say that you indeed need a new solenoid. Now I don't know the price of just the solenoid vs the price of a totally new starter difference is. Look around and see what is available and the cost.

Good luck,
Richard

Richard could be right on here. If you Google the Denso number on the solenoid, it is quite easy to get them much more affordably than from Deere.

I bought a new solenoid on Ebay and it came, I installed it and it didn't work worth a hoot, and the install mechanism, ie a nylon finger was difficult. I pitched it and bought a new starter with solenoid from Jacks Small engines. installed it and starts like it should. I have had good luck with Jacks and E replacements over the years and reckon I should have done that to begin with. I will save my old starter and if the day comes I can find someone to go through it I might. Thanks for your inputs.
