As for wasps eating habits, most are omnivorous, not carnivorous, and will eat fruit. Yellow jackets swarm all over my cherries and apples as soon as they are on the ground. They will also catch flies, spiders and other wasps, as well as your cold cut sub if you're not careful. And according the info posted wasps do also have a barbed stinger, that one I can't testify on, but what they eat I can.

I know a yellow jacket likes beer, and when drinking out of a bottle, watch out, and when drinking out of a can, only pop the top a little...for safety sake. Yellow jackets are mean drunks!

My buddy got a mouth full of yellow jacket about 30 years ago when he took a sip of Mountain Dew. It didn't seem like it would be that much fun but he sure did dance a lot!

I have found that a quart of lacquer thinner dumped into the ground nest at night will kill every one. No need to light it, but I use lacquer in the shop and take all kinds of precautions to protect me, but for them flying stinging critters, I show no mercy.

Very sad, appears they didn't know she had an allergy to venom...and yes the article should have said "YELLOW JACKETS" as they are NOT bees. Few stings are as intense as the ones from those critters, what makes them so scary is that unlike honeybees, yellowjackets can sting multiple times.

Whelp, I done been got.

Mowing grass yesterday and went over a hidden YJ nest in the ground...found out when I got it three times in the back. Then, I tested the top speed of the mower across the field.... :laughing:.

I'm in a bit of pain today. But at dusk I took care of that nest. :thumbsup:

Yellow jackets are hard to figure out, they'll nest with hanging nest like other hornets, they'll build it in a building or under steps or they'll build in a hole in the ground and there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to it. The only good thing is they never use a nest two years in a row.

For the ground nesting yellow jackets, I wait until after dark and pour a quart of laquer thinner down the hole. Kills them now, and you won't find any trace of the thinner in a couple of days.
