Ags or R4's in heavy timber country

Here's a picture of a KAMA with real RICE tires on it. You can really tell the difference in lug depth.
Looks very cool.

How does it ride on gravel or asphalt? Looks like you can swim with those fins! How do they compare to AG tires in use?

This is what it says in the report I posted:Chosing the Right Tire

R2 tread is used in wet farming applications where the machine must run through mud and standing water. Typical applications are rice, sugar cane, and high-value vegetable crops. The tread is twice as deep as the standard R1 tread. While R2 looks extremely aggressive, the typical 45° bar angle is maximized for cleaning in wet soils and is not as efficient for developing traction as R1 in general farming conditions.

Very nice looking tread. Looks like it can skim along the surface of a pond with enough speed!

Mine does not those R-2's on it. What Mike posted is correct about those tires. I would guess if used in drier, harder or rocky surfaces, you could easily spin off one or more of those lugs? Where they would tear off the tire.

What I am finding is that rice tires are R2.

Right! My error. Sorry.

It's interesting to note that the tire in the pic above obviously has a 45 degree lug angle. Now look again at the tires on the KAMA. Those look to be about 25 degrees. I wonder who makes them?

For our area and forrestry use R4's seem to be the preference.

In the report I posted, the only mention of forresty was in the part about tire construction. It stated that bias ply tire sidewalls were more resistant to punctures and the abuse in forrestry operations. I will have to start looking at the tires on timberjacks around here.

I have R-4's and clay, I knew I would lose traction at times but in most places there is enough grass, weeds, branches, I have yet to be really stuck. The R-1's would tear up my next year lawn project considerably more than the R-4's do.

My theory, is get some tire chains if it is that bad, and if the chains aren't helping out enough it is a good day to work in the shop.

Great traction can be had, but the price is to tear up the ground, you must choose what is most important to you.

You are soo right. My R1s cannot go near grass or the lawn will be destroyed. Especially if wet.

Get R4's- much stronger sides then R1's. A small ( 6-10") stump will slice many sidewalls. I agree R4 are poor in heavy clay but are good overall. I run them on my tractor and it is set up for heavy woods use.
ROW tractors/logging equipment may have the tread pattern of a R1 tires but are 12-24 ply tires.
