Spent a few hours yesterday, with the family trapesing through a creek on our property. It is mostly gravel and hard bottom with holes that reach 2-4 foot deep. It was a very nice way to cool down on a warm day. We expeirenced numerous wildlife, including ducks, geese, turtles, fish, and a couple of napping deer that spang across right in front of us. The kids, of course, had to somehow always fall down, when navigating the deeper holes. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Our dogs love the water (part huskys) and go through the deep spots with the kids. This brought back many memories of my childhood, where any water (creeks, ponds, lakes, rivers) and myself, were insepretable. A very nice and relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Any others out there, really enjoy this type of activity?

Absolutely ... I used to work as a summer camp counselor and would take the kids on water hikes. They banned it the year after I finished because it was too 'dangerous'.

I still enjoy doing it - but my company today usually consists of my ultralight spinning rod ... and occasionally one of my buddies that doesn't mind getting his feet wet too (my kids are too young for it).

Patrick, Ya, the threat of liability, has taken many a fun experience away. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

My son (14) and I, have explored the creek below our property line for about a 1/2 mile. The holes grow larger, and have many undercut banks, trees, and rocks. Definetly has some fish holding potential. We will do it again, with our 4 1/2' ultalights. The high banks, bushes and willows, leaves little room for casting. It will mostly be drop and drift into the holes. Mostly sucker minnows, some small bass, and the occasional holed up rainbow or brown. But then, I have a simple fishing motto, "If it bends my pole, I'm a happy man!".

PS: Just think of all the fun you will have, as your kids grow older.

It's great. Every year my father and I go to our "secret" creek to catch some brook trout. You see, higher in the mountains there is an outfitter who stocks the main lake. Every spring the lake overflows and sends a good quantity of trout out the discharge. By June, the water in the creek subsides enough for you to walk right up the middle, hopping from stone to stone. Little 50 gallon pools lead to one another via 1' wide trickles. We start at the high end and work our way down the mountain, sticking our rods in these pools. If nothing hits it in 2 seconds, move on. We finish the day at the edge of the discharge lake at the bottom of the mountain where we switch to fishing with bobbers and enjoy a couple of beers.

My Wife's sis has 37 acres with a nice long windy creek that runs through most of it...It makes for great fishing..The 1st time I walked I was catching every thing from perch, brim(blue gill),to small stripe bass. But as mentioned it can be tight quarters...My solution one of those small kids rods.they can be quite nice especially if you use a really light say 4-6lb line...I also have smalll creek behind the house but it's so over grown right now I think I'll wait till this fall to walk it...The fellow I bought the property from says there are lots of indian stuff up and down it...air-o heads etc...

JohnS,

As a kid I was always around a creek of some kind. Course some of the creeks were most properly called a ditch! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I spent many a day all year round walking the creeks. Even during the winter when we had snow and ice we would walk the creek. Course we would fall in when the ice would get thin and by the time we got home the jeans would be frozen into an ice Levis but it was fun! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Later...

Unfortunately, I haven't been in the nearest river, Canadian river, a bit over a mile away but driving over the bridge I have seen several groups of youngsters walking in it as well as some young families. Looked great. Can't get my wife very deep in any of our ponds (less than knee deep). She is afraid of water mocasins, snapping turtles, and the big alligator snapping turtles.
