Air Compressor Performance

I have a number of older compressors and wished I had wrote down how long they ran, to fill from empty. So I could see how well they were still doing.

Thought maybe others had the same thought at some point and numbers could be collected and shared.

One is an 80 gal with an SS5 compressor and 6hp motor, 0-130psi in 7min 16 sec.

Next is a 60 gal SS aluminum twin with a 5hp motor, 0-125psi in 5min 32 sec

A little 2 gal 1hp, 0-135psi in 56 seconds. Might need to adjust that regulator if that gauge is correct.

What kinds of numbers do you get?

What kinds of numbers do you get?

Is that the original motor on the Ingersoll?
I find it odd that it is not showing a continous duty motor and looking lists 30 minutes.?

I will run my Ingersoll 60 gallon and my new Black Diamond 80 gallon empty to full and post the numbers

never timed it. My 7.5hp ingersoll rand dual cylinder is rated around 15 cfm iirc

Normally turn it on grab, my hose and by that time I can start using it. It pumps more air than i can normally use

I've got a 5 HP, 80 gal IR as well. About 2001 vintage. I don't generally time it from 0- anything as it's always filled. I shut the valve when not using it and it holds the pressure for months on end. I did time it once just to sanity check the CFM and it checked out at ~16. It's a simple matter to run a quick differential pressure test and use an online calculator if you want to make sure a compressor's still in decent shape. No need to go to zero pressure either. Check your end result against the compressor's rated CFM.

Everytime I think I want a larger capacity and quieter compressor setup, I am reminded by the long run/fill times, and stick with my 4.5gal, 3.5hp loud Porter Cable Job Boss, which only takes a minute to fill.

My 60 gallon single stage bit the dust last Summer. Not complaining, it lasted me 23 years and used it quite a bit. Looking at comparable new ones in the $1K range digging s littler deeper into the specs. many like DeWalt, IR, and those similar have an expected service life of 1,000 to 1,500 hours of run time. Campbell Hausfeld is the only one I found in that price range that their expected service life is 5,000 hrs. Of course, that is expected doing normal maintenance of oil change and air filter.

Ended up with a 60 gallon 2 stage, with I think 11 cfm @ 90 psi. Enough to run any of my air tools, and HVLP paint gun. Also has a 75% duty cycle, while similar units in the price range was 50%.

Not many U.S.A. built here anymore unless you want to spend big bucks. Even the Quincy lower end may be assembled here, but imported components.

Something I've never did and probably won't do anyway. I see no need. Besides I have around 250 gallons of combined receivers, which I require for my plasma table anyway.

Dang, I didn't know IR's were made in India... Glad I don't have one. My 30 year old Quincy QP was made here and so was my Sullaire Screw compressor I keep as a standby.

Here's one of my compressors, I've had it since the early 80's,

I've long since forgot it's ratings, but it works just fine for what I need it for and it just keeps just chugging along.

It's an "honest" 5 hp compressor, unlike those fake ratings you see on them today!

That's a really nice one!!! Pretty sure they don't make them like that anymore. Or they cost a fortune..
