air handler coils froze up - question

/ air handler coils froze up - question #51
Come on now;) While I hate to work on the A/C in the attic in the summer. My stuff is in the attic cause I put it there. It's out of the way. When my WH burst a few months back my pan caught all the water that the pipes could put out. My WH is in a 30x30 pan with 6-8'' sides with a 2'' drain

I've rarely seen a water heater installed in what I would consider a proper installation. But at least mine isn't in the attic.:)

I'll have to agree with you on that. Code is only min. standards. If I install anything .I'm going to make sure it doesn't come back to bite me. How some get by with the work they do I'll never know

I agee.. some of the setups I've seen wouldn't catch a leaky fitting let alone a bust condition..

Now you got me worried. I have my solar tank in the attic and it just has the usual pan.

Those small pans that you buy at plumbing supply / box stores will pass code. They just won't pass the burst test;)

Yea, they always seem like token pans to me. Where did you get yours?

I made it... Sheet metal & a brake. Anyone could have a sheet metal shop make 1

Was talking with a HVAC tech today who passed out in an attic from the heat on Tuesday trying to change out an air handler. Some genius had welded the gas pipe connector, too. These mechanical systems need to be installed where people can actually work on them.

Soundguy, if the drain line is blocked (a not uncommon occurance) then this will not help. It needs a totally separate line.
I will have to check out the line and maybe add a line from the pan.

I knew that when I bought my current place that the attic was a stupid place to put the air handler. Think about it, cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Sounds like dumb and dumber to me.

We got the place at a good price. If and when the economy picks up along with some improvements, we will be looking to downsize some more and sell. Maybe make a few bucks in the process. (Seems like a better idea than the stock market but that's another topic.)
