Is there really a reasonable weight .22 + - air pistol that has big impact at close range? Would love to have one that would stop a coyote or equivalent at 25 yards and repeat 6-8 shots. PCP seems like the answer but they tend to be bulky. I can't use a firearm where I need this. Too near the airport. Am I asking for voo doo? I need a side arm vs rifle if possible.

What's the reason for no firearm? The reason I ask is usually any regulation that excludes a firearm also excludes an air rifle.

Now, if you're going with the "You're only in trouble if you get caught" philosophy, you may try subsonic .22lr rounds. I've never actually used them, but I'd like to.

I would doubt there is such an animal. The best I have seen in a handgun is a .177 at 500 FPS and a .22 at 460 FPS. These are light projectiles, so the energy will be low. Plenty for a squirrel but way too light for a coyote sized critter. You can check out a company called Air Airms where they sell high end air rifles and pistols, but they seem to have no large caliber. I agree if you find something it will be powered by a pressure cylinder, not spring/recoil. I have a nice .22 rifle that shoots over 1000 FPS and will flat knock down a squirrel at 50 yards, but even it would be light for a coyote. I have seen that in England (where the wimps have outlawed firearms) there are some large caliber hunting weapons that are air powered, so you may want to search online for products available there. I expect the fellows at Air Arms could advise you. They can be found online.

Archery maybe?

More effective for sure and quiet.

Trapping works good too.

I don't understand the airport thing. Are you hunting coyotes on airport property? Trapping would be better. If just "near" airport property whatever is legal for you to hunt with hunt with. Archery is acceptable and preferrable way to hunt in urbarn areas.

by your term "STOP" and "SIDE ARM" I would think maybe you are needing protection instead of just removing the vermin from the gene pool. If that is the case get some pepper spray that is used a a bear stopper.

I use the .22 CB caps in a Henry lever action- quieter than my .22 Benjamin pump pellet gun and more powerful, about the same velocity but higher grain bullet weight= more energy. Still wouldn't try either on a Coyote though...I believe in clean, quick kill.

Stop a coyote?
You might take a eye out or put a knot on his head, ruin his day, piss him off, or maybe cause a fatal wound to be realized a day or 2 later.
Not realistic or even ethical in my opinion.

I cannot think of a single air rifle that is readily available here that I would recommend for humane coyote control. And an air pistol is even less use-full for this purpose. You could consider a suppressed pistol in 9mm or larger. They are legal in your state, there is a rather long process to go thru to get one, and they are not cheap. What exactly are you wanting to do? Could you be more specific, maybe we could think of something else.

Whoa guys, I forget that nuance doesn't cyber space too well!
I'm not hunting anything, I have property adjacant to the airport. My true need is for snake killer, possible wild dog/coyote/hog type deterent. None of the three are absolutely known in any numbers in this part of the county, but are seen. I take my grand son back there sometimes as well as fishing a little known hole, and due to the proximity of the airport firearms are considered a security risk, however 100 yards away they hunt deer with high powered rifles. Just a matter of where the line is drawn. i don't expect to kill a coyote, dog or certainly not a hog, but if you have several shots you may be able to deter him.
I have seen several ads for single shot pistols that have over 700 fps with.22 lightweight pellets and around 570 fps with a knockdown round. But they are single shot, big and bulky. A normal sized side arm would be better. If it doesn't exist it just doesn't, oh well....

Thanks for the replies
PS; I do have a CCL, and may just carry anyway in case of emergency I'd rather pay the fine than get someone hurt.

Ok, how about carrying a big can of pepper spray.. it would deter the animals of any stripe, and I would think it would be legal on your own property. It should solve the problem
