I run a Mossberg 20 pump. Wife likes it and can shoot it real good. Brother-in-law borrowed it last fall for rabbit. (Which reminds me I better get it back!) I've seen slug barrels for it and it comes with interchangeable chokes. Which does me no good at all. I've also got a big ol 12 pump hangin on the rack, which is where it will probably spend the rest of it life. The 20 is just too nice a gun.

Went with the Winchester

We spent most of an afternoon at the gun shop, taking several shotguns out back and blazing away at targets. Thought the Wife would like the 20 gauge, but she really is partial to the 12s. More imposing BOOM!, she says. Tried the youth models, but she didn't like them. Finally came home with the Winchester 1300 Black Shadow field gun. She's right on target with every shot, which is something I never in my life expected to see! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Watch out fox, the Wife is armed!

Bird, that is the shotgun we use at work. Tough as nails.

The guns they use on the range have had thousands of rounds through them and still are going strong. Both slugs and buck shot. After seeing what they have gone through and the stories I've heard from other people the 870 would be my choice for a very dependable gun.

Gordon, we carried them in the squad cars, and they got cleaned once a month whether they needed it or not./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif There's lots of nicer, fancier guns, but I don't think I know of any that are more dependable.

Boondox, as you kind of noticed in all the information the other posters have offered, you can't go wrong choosing one of the popular models like Remington or Winchester. they both have been around a LONG time and quality at a premium while still keeping their prices affordable to the average shooter. You did the right thing by having your wife test different models as that is where the differences lie. Only she can decide (and did) what she likes. Your wife should be able to enjoy her gun for a lifetime.

BoonDox,

Well you got the gun so I'll skip all of the advice about getting an 870. I have seen 870 take a heck of alot of abuse and keep on going. No pun intended but they are bullet proof.

I shot an 870 that had a shock absorbing stock. The stock had what appeared to be a couple of rods that took the edge of the recoil. I shot almost 40 rounds of 12 ga shells, half 00 buck, in a few hours one day without a problem. Course the key is to plant the stock firmly on the cheek and in the shoulder. Its world of hurt time if the 12ga is floating near your face or is not firmly in the shoulder. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif That stock certainly made it real forgiving if you did not mount the gun firmly in place. I once saw a man who would NOT listen to the instructors on how to shoot a shotgun. By the time he was finished TRYING to qualify his right arm was bruised beyond belief. It took three instructors to get him to even finish the course. One behind him to tell him the qualification course, one to the man's left to make sure he did not do something stupid in that direction, and a third instructor literally holding the man's right arm parallel to the ground to form the shoulder pocket. At this point the man was so bruised he could barely move his arm into position. All because the idiot would not listen. He did not qualify and I'm sure he could not move his shoulder and right arm for a couple of days if not a week. He was really messed up...

The shotgun is one heck of a self defense weapon. Just keep the bad guys away from the gun so they can't make a grab. Other than that, they have a real problem facing a shotgun operated by someone who can and will use it.......

Later...

Boondox,

I am a benelli fan, even though they are italian made. These guys make a great semiauto shotgun.
The M1 tactical (http://www.benelliusa.com/m1_tactical/index.htm) has low recoil, for a 12 ga, since its semiauto. Also the pistol grip is handy. Large magazine capacity and very fast second shot are also a plus. I have also found that this gun is simple to operate.
Some folks worry about a semiauto since the pump is fundamentaly more reliable. However, I have never had this gun jam or improperly feed a round, and the pumps have significantly more recoil IMHO.

Feild stripping is very fast and simple.

I beileve that the marines have adopted a modified version of this weapon for their shotgun needs.

Just my two cents.
