I had thought all diesels had glow plugs. However the 3000/4000 twenty series handout notes that the 4x20s all have glow plugs while not saying anything wrt the 3x20 tractors. Just to make sure, do the 3120, 3320, 3520, and 3720 have glow plugs as well?

thanks

My 3120 has the glow plugs installed as a standard. Can't imagine a diesel without them, but, they may exist.

My 3320 (new in Dec.) doesn't have glow plugs. They call it an air intake heater. Pushing and holding the key in activates it. Doesn't get that cold here so I can't really tell you how well it works in cold weather, but I remember the dealer telling me about a hold up on mine because of a problem getting them started in cold weather up north. Maybe they started putting glow plugs in them, but definetly not in mine. Something to look into where you live.

TGLASS is correct, they use a heating element in the intake manifold to heat incoming air. They meet the starting standard for cold temps.

Tilt! it can get down to -40 around here and even parked in the barn with various plugin heaters, I think I might need glow plugs.

How do I find out which tractors have glow plugs? call Deere and ask?

I just went through some of the online manuals for the Deeres. The 3xxx and 4xxx series manuals specify using glow plugs. I know the 790 and 990 use the intake heater (I have a 790). The 2xxx series weren't too clear, but I'm pretty sure they have an intake heater too.

So, it appears the tractor with Yanmar engines use the intake heaters, the engines manufactured by Deere use glow plugs...based upon an admittedly short review of those manuals.

My tractor is normally parked in the garage. Also, it doesn't usually get that cold (20's) in southern PA. If I were in a colder environment, I'd sure install a block heater on any tractor.

As noted by others, the Yanmar engines in the 3X20 tractors have an intake air heater and the John Deere engines in the 4X20s have glow plugs. In my opinion the Yanmar engines start easier in cold weather (without the block heater) than the Deere engines (3 vs. 4 cylinders also help). With a block heater, both seem to start equally well.

The air heater can be activated by pushing in on the key. I have held it for as long as 30-40 seconds in real cold weather (-20 F in the worst case) then contined holding it on while cranking. With a good battery, I did manage to get one started without a block heater at this temperature, but a block heater helps a bunch.

John Deere also offers a transmission oil heater that you might want to consider if you have to start many times at -40.

My Dodge has an intake heater. I have read on TDR about trucks setting for weeks in minus 0 weather and cranking right up. JC

This is from the 3320 manual:

9. For cold weather starting, use the glow plug. Activate the glow plug by pushing in the ignition key switch. Pre-glow for 10 seconds, holding the key in while cranking the engine. When the engine starts, continue to push in the key until the engine runs smoothly.

I wonder which is correct...glow plug or intake heater.

The 4115 and 2520 that replaced it are both direct injection, no glow plugs.

My 4010 has a Yanmar engine with glow plugs. Think this is the case with the 2210, 2305 and now the 2320: Yanmar with glow plugs.
