all deere diesels have glow plugs?

Indirect injection = glowplugs.
Direct injection = air preheater.

Yanmar TN Series 1 engines are indirect injected. 790, 2210, 2305, 4100, 4110, 4115, 2320, 2520.

Yanmar TN Series 2 Engines are Direct injected. 990, 4x10's, and 3x20's.

There is no trouble starting the direct injected engines in the cold. A block heater is good idea on either kind.

As was said, the Cummins are direct injected. They have much less trouble starting in the cold than the other brands glow plug machines.

Oops I think Ralph is right on the 4115 being Direct Injected...

The 4x20 engines have intake heaters, not glow plugs, even though the manual mentions "activating glow plugs" for cold weather starting. But here in Quebec it often gets down to -20F and below, and I have had zero problems starting my 4520 at those temperatures.

I had the dealer install a block heater, but haven't bothered using it yet, that's how easily the tractor starts up in the very cold.

No glow plugs in my 4600 - and it does get cold here in Minnesota. Therefore I have both hydraulic and block heaters installed - they work very well and I would recommend them as a failsafe to anyone (if possible). I've never had very much success with the direct injection approach.

This seems the way to go for cold weather starting/initial operatons. Can these be installed on all tractors, or only specific models? I am considering a used 4400 which I probably will only locate sans heaters.

Can't speak for all the Deere models, but I know the 4x00 series (like my 4600) have them available. Therefore you should be fine with the 4400.

My old 790 had direct injection and I believe the new ones do too. All of my diesels 990, 970, & 5320 have an air heater element and none have starting problems when it gets cold out.

Don't think I'de ever need it, but never heard of a hyd. heater before. Could be very helpful in cold weather. Is it a dealer add on or option?

It was an option that I purchased for my JD4600 through the dealer. I had them put it on, but after having to remove it when changing Hydraulic fluids, it seems easy enough to put in yourself. Mine goes in where the Hydraulic screen is (not the big filter).

I recommend it if you can get it - between that and the block heater, it does save wear and tear on the tractor in cold winters.
