HELLO TO ALL,
you say you used treated wood. is that the kind
that destroys the bolts? i have been told this is
what happens if you do not use a plastic tube
between the wood, and the bolt.
any comments on this?

Hey Rob,
Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate your guidance on previous posts and PM's. The OP welding method you mentioned sounds like the way to do it. I'll use that next time. I do have several projects in store and you're right about the ideas flowing!:)

William,
I used treated wood and galvanized carriage bolts. I haven't heard about the wood treatment destroying metal. Thanks for the info and I'll look into it.

Brian,
The solar panel on this model recharges an internal lithium battery which powers the filter. If not used for a period of time, directions state to recharge the filter by putting the filter under a 60 watt light bulb for one hour. There is no on/off switch nor any adjustment dials for sensitivity or shade. I should have searched the net before "impulse buying". After searching around, I know now that $99.00 could've bought me more options. I tried charging it again and welding with it. Instead of flickering, now it has two dark streaks through the filter.

Harbor freight auto darkening helmet for me. Adjusts from #9-#13 shades, strike an arc and your in business. Cheap, light weight, works good.

After getting one for camp, I bought another for at home. After years of using stock helmets, they are a breeze to work with in comparison. I can actually see where I'd Like to strike the arc!

MtnView and 3RLL,

Count me in, my son and daughter gave me the HF Autodarkening unit for Christmas, it's great.

Like Rob said, I had also stuck with the stock type for a long time, probably a few years too long. It always seemed to work, so I never pursued the auto-darkening models.

To anyone still using the old stock models, do yourself a favor, you will love the autodarkening!!

Well, the dummy that I am, I used the old std helmets for, uh, well until about a month ago. 30 some years, I'm not sure if I'm dumb, stubborn, lazy or just plain stupid. What I do know is that I should have bought an auto darkening helmet a looooong time ago.:D

I am looking to get one that is part of a positive air flow system. I plan on working with some chem's and figure might as well get the flip up helmet for it. I especally like the idea after watching the video of fel hooks being welded on. Not much can be taken for granted these days. :/

Thanks Milkman!
I went to Home Depot to get those locking pliers but all I found in that size was $22.00 a piece. I went to HF and picked up four for under $20.00. I know they're low quality but I've used them several times in the last two months practicing my welding and so far so good! While I was there, I picked up an 8' X 8' welding blanket. It sure came in handy covering up my FEL's hydraulic lines!

Hi Mud,
And welcome to the wonderful world of welding. That was a very smart move as far as the pliers go. Even the very best pliers and clamps can be ruined by the heat and splatter of welding. I keep two types of pliers and clamps. One for welding, the other for everything else.
Later,
Wayne
