I have a small fluorescent light over the kitchen sink that stays on most of the time at night so we can run in and out of the kitchen for coffee or snacks without turning on the main light. Of course it attracts hundreds of flying insects to the window every night.

I was just in there and noticed something at the window that seemed out of place. I looked closer and there are seven little tree frogs at various places around the perimeter of the window having a feast. They have figured it out and hit the mother lode. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Ozarker - Where are you from ?? - Is the OZ a hint??

In the wet season (Summer) we have hundreds of green tree frogs around they house. We try and keep them at bay as the snakes eat the frogs.

We have yellow external lights to keep the bugs away and try and keep inside (white) lighting to a minimum when the frogs are around.

If you keep the bug numbers down, the frog numbers stay down and hopefully the snakes.

Still nothing for me to walk around the house at night and see dozens of frogs.

Cheers

The Ozarks is in the US. I'm originally from Kansas City, Kansas (The Wizard of Oz) and all my family is still there. Then I got drafted and decided to hang around in the Army for awhile. Then I retired from the Army and am now in Missouri.....the Missouri Ozarks.

The Ozarks is a geographical area in southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas and part of northeast Oklahoma. I have a place on the Gasgonade River and am about a 45 minute drive from the Lake of the Ozarks. I'm a city kid trying to learn how to be a hillbilly and operate a tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Wife just bought a plastic frog to put next to our water garden. I made the comment that it looked like a plastic piece of junk. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
After looking at your picture. It looks like I owe her an apology. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
As it turns out we started up the pond a week ago. A live frog has already moved in. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hey Neal,
I don't know if you are intrested or not, you may know this already, but the frogs in your pic are called White's Tree Frogs. Yall think of them as pests but I can sell them retail at 25-30 dollars a piece. They do make good pets however, usually pretty calm wil sit in your hand our crawl on your arm. Just Thought I would share some of my reptile and amphib knowledge. If anybody has any more questions about herps(reptiles and amphibians) feel free to contact me on this board or email me.
See yall later
Nathaniel

Our rental house has storm windows outside the regular sashes and the bugs can squeeze in between. There is a flourescent light over the kitchen sink that is always on (because we haven't found the switch). The other morning I noticed a small, black, furry spider on the outside of the outer glass chasing bugs on the inside of the outer glass. It was a riot to watch. The little spider would stalk up on the bug then try to pounce but all he got was a face full of glass. Spiders must be a little shy on the 'ole grey matter as this went on until I got tired of watching /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

On a similar track, we have a motion detector light on the back of the house 3 floors high, and last year the bats figured it out. About 10pm every night, they would start flying around the back yard for bugs, they figured out that if they set off the motion light, it would attract the bugs, the bats would have a buffet also.
They would do this until 2-3am, and it got to be bad because the light would constantly switch off/on waking us up. This year I turned it off.
This year a Flycatcher built a nest in the elbow of our downspout and has hatched 2 broods this year. It's fun to watch them take bugs on the wing. I think our crop of deer flys this year has been severaly deleted due to this friend.
