DJ54, that's not too shabby an idea. It would definitely cut down the time spent weeding between the rows by hand. As the setup is only one row, it might make sense to use a scatter type shoe on the seeding mechanism to get a few more carrots in there per foot.

Also, perhaps I could hill with the lister gang before planting (planting the carrots on the ridge) and use the Farmall peanut digger to undercut them when harvest comes. I was wondering when I could finally find a use for that thing!

I was just thinking, knowing the Lilliston's are adjustable to throw dirt in, or out. When small, throw towards the center of the row, then as they progress, turn to throw, or hill them some.

That buddy of mine bought one of those Jung seeders. It does as advertised, and seed spacing is amazing. Guess I'm too tight to spend that kind of money for just a home garden. If your in the produce business, I guess it'd be worth it, and being able to write it off helps. His biggest problem with carrots is weeds seem to grow faster than the carrots. He's not much on the hand work. He told me of an idea he came up with, and may try it myself next year. Whether in a ridge, or flat row, take a hoe, and cut a relief, maybe a couple inches deep. Fill that relief with some sort on inert compost, such as peat moss, or mushroom compost. Plant the carrot seeds on the top portion of the compost, water in well and see what happens. Hopefully, they will grow, but the compost will keep the weeds down, at least until the carrots are big enough to be abe to tell the difference.

Something else you may want to consider, but don't know if your produce is marketed as organic. I experimented late last year with corn gluten meal as a weed preventitive. You can buy the organic Preen, but it's like $16.95 for #5 here. Other companies sell it in 50# bags for about $28.00. I went to a local feed mill, and bought 50# of corn gluten pellets @ $15.00 per 100# that are used as a livestock feed additive. Brought it home, and ground into meal, with a small burr grinder I have. I applied it to match Preens application rate of 1 - 2 oz. per sq. ft. I then took my push plow with 5 tine weeder, and mixed it in the top 1-1/2" to 2" depth. We got a decent soaking rain that evening, so there was no need to soak it down per Preens directions for their product. It actually worked better than I expected, and kept probabaly 95% of the weeds out. I did have some sod regenerate, some red clover, and another weed I'm not familiar with come up. But few at most. Another plus to this is, the gluten is 10% nitrogen, so it acts like a side dress too.

Attached is a pic of some Roma green beans I planted the last week of July, and are right at 30 days old. I applied the gluten once the beans, and sweet corn at the far end were approx. 4" tall. You need to let plants establish roots, before applying it, as thats what it does, it prevent formation of roots.

I did spray glyphosate along the electric fence, but only 6" to 8" wide, and mostly to the outside, and directly under. The rest was only hoed before the gluten was put down. Afterwards, I never touched it just to see what it would do. It was a small experimental plot, using left over seed. Note the foxtail at bottom left. I did not apply it there, and you sure can tell the difference. I will definitely be using it on most of my garden next year..!!

When I make a trip through with my RG40 row crop cultivator, the crust goes away. Kills the young weeds too.
