My grandfather gave me an Allis 170 with a bucket a few years ago that had been restored. It worked great and I've had no problems until recently. Lately with a load in the bucket, if I go to raise the bucket it makes a kind of screeching noise and goes up all jerky. I've checked the hydraulic fluid and it is full. The bucket is definitely not overloaded. What could be the problem?

Perhaps the screeching noise is the relief valve relieving. Put a gage in the circuit and do some logical trouble shooting. Only other screeching I can think of would be metal to metal contact.

Check your pickup screen and filter.

Ditto. Almost all problems like this are on the suction side of the pump.

The screeching noise definitely sounds like some dort of valve or something, not metal on metal. Does anybody know where the pickup screen and filter are located?
