- JD 5320N Vineyard, 1981 Deere 910, 1980 Kubota B22, 1983 Ford 1710
1953 Allis-Chalmers B
???Ford Jubilee
1981 Ford 1700 4 x 4 Gear
1990 Kubota Compact
1993 Kubota 4 x 4 w/ Backhoe and Front Loader
1996 John Deere 990 Gear w/ Front Loader
2006 Kioti CK 20 w/ Woods Backhoe, Front Loader, Cab.
This is the list of tractors I grew up with. The Allis was something. If you were pulling a heavy log and foot slipped off the clutch, the front end would come right over on you. It had brakes but they seldom worked and never worked going backwards. But it ran well, hauled wood and would run on homemade fuel, if you wanted it to.
The Jubilee was two wheel drive but a huge step up from the Allis. It broke through the ice and took a swim but after draining the oil, kept on running…until it burned up in a barn fire.
The Ford still runs today. It was a no frills workhorse that reminds me of the dependability of today’s Kioti. It was the first 4 x 4 we had. The engine is tired with 1800 hours on it and it needs a rebuild but everything else works like the day it was bought and it has never broken down. Running out of fuel was a pain.
The JD 990 has 600 hours on it and is old before it’s time. It works okay but the brakes squeak, the gears grind a bit, the hydraulic pump has never really been big enough but it still was a lot nicer and more powerful than the Ford 1700 except it won't last as long without a lot of maintenance.
Oh, the 1993 Kubota…That darn tractor is broken more than it works. The control arms on the backhoe are always rusted and broken and when you take them apart to fix them one will marvel at the lousy craftsmanship. The engine and clutch and parts…it just has been a bad tractor. It is my brothers and right now, it is sitting as usual with the hood off. He will get it going and it will work that day but be a pain in his behind shortly there after. The dealers fix it but it just sucks.
The Kubota compact…just runs and runs. We bought it for the MMM but that was a lousy setup and so we just had that deck, which we took off the first year, hauled away for scrap. We use the 3 pt. hitch and PTO for little jobs, like spraying down narrow rows but it is only used a few hours a year.
The CK 20…nice machine. There are 20 hours on it, 2 of which are mine. A very “safe” machine with all the safety features….the opposite of the old Allis. The HST is nice but what is all that hissing noise? The hydraulics are well matched to the bucket and the backhoe is really nice. I like the cup holder. Need a place to put a shovel. My dog fits at my feet just fine and is content. The heat on the floor seems excessive? First impression, I like it!
