You can plot a lot to allot plots.

Allot does not have the same meaning as "a lot"
You can allot some space in the barn for your tractor
Your tractor takes up a lot of space

Noone would dispute that alot is used quite a lot. It seems words do and will change in langues that are still alive. Somebody, nobody, etc. were likely, some one, no body.
