I've also patched 3 holes in our old roof from 30-06 (or similar rounds size) found one round lodged into the roof others were lost in insulation that I only knew was there due to rain leaking in!

When we sold our last house I was putting on a new set of shingles and found three bullet holes; one in the roof and two in the eaves. Appeared to be .38 and .25s. Niiiiice neighborhood!

When I lived in Puerto Rico I found a spent 38 on the concrete roof of my house. We lived a short distance from a notorious barrio where there were gunshots heard about every night. Concrete makes good building material!

actually a 22 lr can be very deadly at 300 yards or more, using a good gun is key to long range accuracy. nice bolt action gun can drop wood chucks at 300+ yards ask me how I know :) even ask anyone in military 1000+ yards or more than in deadly range with any significant gun .223 up.mark m

No question about deadliness at 300 yards and hitting a soft vital spot. The statement I was addressing tho was a claim of deadliness at about 1000 and 2000 yards for 22 shorts and long rifles respectively. Significant harm at these distances requires ever more pinpoint misfortune - - and that the bullet even gets that far suggests a high elevation discharge. Firing uphill- or squirrel hunting perhaps.

In regard to your accuracy at 300 with 22lr - are you loading your own or using match rounds? I spent a day as a kid trying to sight in a couple of 22s at 300 using off the shelf LRs. First I tried the semiauto using the trash can. I found I could never hit it twice and finally determined it a variance in what came out the muzzle. The vertical pattern was about 8 feet high. When I did hit the can the bullet just dented it. --- I then tried the long barrel bolt action single shot. Much better. A pattern about 3 feet high. When I hit the can the bullet penetrated one side but didnt leave a noticeable dent in the other. I just cant see varminting at 300 with what I experienced of the variability of off the shelf 22LRs.

A 223 is a whole different story, I think. Arent they both heavier and a Mach 4 bullet, or am I mixing that with some other 22 variation?

A 55 grain 5.56 travels at ~about 3000 fps.

Of course there are heavier bullets available as well, up to about 69 grain, they travel a little slower.
