Almost Got Shot Today

That reminds me of the look when the game warden comes sliding in to the local rifle range out in the forest after hearing some 'fast guns' go off.

They get all bent out of shape about that kind of thing..

Similar thing happened to me when shot kept pouring down on my metal building. My solution, I got out my 12 gauge and fired off several rounds ( in the dirt) to make enough noise so the person shooting knew someone was around, and THEY were the one who better look out. It worked never happened again.
Obviously one cant shoot in the direction of the person shooting, but the noise should be enough to let people in the vicinity know "someone" is shooting in the area, and they also should be careful, or at least may also get shot "accidentally"

Also figuring worse case scenario, I would think you could reasonably know the distance the bullet traveled, figuring it wasn't a 50cal. os that if there is a next time you can rush to those areas.

This may not help but... if you county has a "web gis" you could find out who owns the properties in that area. Have an attorney send each property owner a letter describing the incident and the liability risk ($$$) they are taking. Hunting is one thing but random shooting when you don't know who is around thats a different story.

You could possibly get other neighbors involved or list all properties in the area on the letter so it could not be traced back to you. And it could be that the property owner does not know it is happening on his property.

Just a thought.

I'm about to have problems with game wardens I know. My family has already been brushed off by the sheriff when people vandalized the house at the old homestead. There is someone hunting illegally on our other place in Ar and I'm going to make sure I'm there during the hunting season. This will be interesting. I'll be up there clearing a pasture and cutting firewood so I'll make sure I make enough noise that everyone knows there are people living there again. The stupid state law up there says it's my responsibility to put a purple paint mark on the trees no more than 100 feet apart or else anyone who wants to can come on there and hunt. That's a bunch of bull to me. A person shouldn't have to live in fear of being shot by a stray bullet on their own property. Or have to worry about happening across a hunter that wasn't invited or given permission to hunt there. It's just not right. I don't even hunt on public land or group leases down here any more because of all the drunks that go hunting with a 30 pack in their belly for warmth. It's just not safe.

Down here I don't have to mark a thing. If they come on private property with a firearm and without written permission they lose their guns, their vehicle and get a free vacation at the county jail. That is if they get past the person that owns the land. Some states just have their priorities backwards. Thankfully Texas isn't one of them.

I had talks with all my neighbors here about shooting crazily. They are all cool about it and I'm confident they will call the cops if they see someone doing it. All the neighbors even have permission to hunt on my land and I do on theirs too but they know the rules. It's kids that don't belong around here and a few stupid adults that are driving around the dirt roads drinking and shooting at anything that moves that we have the most problem with. Just a couple weeks ago I saw fresh 30 cal bullet holes in a gas pipeline marker on the road in front of our property. Whoever did that must have been stoned out of his mind. a 308 or 30-06 can pretty easily kill a person at a mile. They say max effective range is between 600 and 1000 yards depending on who you ask but I've seen kills with a 308 at nearly a mile. Most of the ones I build are effective and very accurate to 1000 yards. I routinely shoot prairie dogs at between 600 and 900 yards with my rifle. I even got a coyote at a measured 1200 yards across a canyon a couple years ago. I had a little training obviously. bullets of any caliber can do damage at a very long range. I don't know why people don't understand that when they go out shooting at cans or whatever. They just have no comprehension of the power in a rifle bullet.

I have considered doing exactly that. I will be using the GIS to figure out which properties were potentially the source. In fact I had a tax map showing them all, but just handed it out to a surveyor who is doing some work for me.

I will be contacting the Sheriff later today to see if the deputy was able to identify the shooters.

Scary situation and I'm sure I'd be upset too if that ever happened to me. Around these parts, it's usually good ole boys who own the property and shoot on their property, therefore, they appreciate a courtesy visit from YOU instead of the Po-Po.

Of course, when in doubt of who the perps are and where they are...you did exactly what I would have done.

I agree with the other poster about the web GIS. Also, you can go to your counties Chamber of Commerce and usually pick up a county plat map. I picked one up shortly after buying my spread. I went around to all my neighbors and introduced myself, giving them a business card with all my contact info. I told them that if they ever needed anything, call me. I shoot often, never hear a peep from my neighbors, of course hot lead isn't lodging into their trees or whizzing over their heads either.

Just last weekend, I saw an article in the paper about a young boy being hit (in the neck I think it said) by a stray .22 bullet and died. I did not read all the details, but it was apparently someone shooting carelessly quite a distance away from where the boy was.
One of the privileges and problems of living in the country. But intelligent shooters would rarely create such a problem.

If it required an intellegence test for some of our civil liberties.. it sure would keep plenty of yahoo's off the street, out of the gun stores.. and heck.. probably out of everything.. guess that wouldn't go over as long as those same yahoo's were still allowed to vote...

I know that people are killed pretty regularly by stray 22 rounds. Just fall down dead out of the blue. There must be a lot of stray rounds flying around. I was at the gun shop today and they told me that the kill range of a 22 long rifle is a mile and a half. heck they said a 22 short is deadly at 3/4 of a mile. Just imagine how far 223 flies? It sure wouldn't be a bad idea if people would take a NRA gun safety course before they start shooting.

The responsible among us will already have taken a gun safety course or retained what their parents taught them. The yahoos don't care and won't bother to learn. I used to be against mandatory firearms licensing and registration. I am now rethinking the licensing part.
