I find it interesting to have stray bales for insulation, and bigger date plan then me. I think getting away from society cool, think about that, and my spend my time a bit like that. But I am guessing you are green person when using hay. Respect that, not my thing. But you also remind me of the Amish I see with engines drawn by horses. It is a technicality for them.

Living off the grid interests me. Maybe someday. But when I build I only want to do it once. I think about how it will work when I am old, and next time it needs to be maintained.

If I was hard up for money, I would not be off the grid using hay bales. But we all have our thing. I think it is cool.

Not sure if this is the best thread, but we are looking at putting solar into a shed at our NH place in lieu of wiring it (it is literally right next to our power line but 300 from the house).

We could go very basic with nothing but a light, or go whole hog with a 150, 300W or more system including battery storage and Inverter. The only thing that we could really use other than the lights is battery charging capacity for dirt bikes, snowmobiles, brush mower etc. Additional challenges are extreme low winter temps (below freezing mid November to April, with lows -20° F or lower), seasonal snowfall average of 10’, and largely unattended.

Alte has off grid shed and house systems, from lights only on up. I can pick it up to avoid shipping.

Figured it was about time I quit dropping these things into other threads, and set up a dedicated one.....

This vid shows how folks on this BC island get by w/o power. Not a How To, just What Do They Use ?

Depends if utility grid power is available . Depends if you have the money for a hobby. Solar panels across the road from my place operate with 14% of their installed capacity .

I like independent power sources, for a few reasons. That sounds like a good way to set up that shed. If power is out, it's nice to be able to charge small loads, w/o firing a generator up.

Depending on sight lines, that may give you an alternate platform for video security.

For some, it's a hobby. Others power their entire home, off-grid or intertie. Some charge EVs too.

It all takes money, but what doesn't..... Only real limits are motivation, and inertia.

So if I make 12,000 kwH and assume something like $0.15 per kwh (estimating utility fairy-tale fees....) if purchased, that's $1,800.00.

Add HST at 13%, and you'd pay $2,034.00 to replace that power. Assuming just a marginal 30% income tax rate, you'd need to make $2,905.71 to pay for that power.
