Alternatives to drywall?

I finished my 30X50 with 3/4in OSB...2 coats of prime X 2 coats of paint.
My 2X6 studs are 24in apart with R19 sealed insulation.
I did the ceiling with the same metal as the outside walls,
this worked out real nice for me.
Once I shot the ceiling up it was done...no painting /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
12ft high ceiling
Then I blew insulation in the attic.
All my elec is on the outside of the walls, nice clean conduit job,
being on the outside asures you easy acess for upgrades
and you never run a nail or screw in it!
A 75,000 propane over-head heater warms it up fast even on the coldest days.....2 54in ceiling fans also.

Do you have any idea of the price? Sounds appealing.

Your local box store will have 4X8 sheets of hardboard covered with a white vinyl hard finish. They go up easy and are bright white which means you get more from your lighting and fewer dark spots in the workshop. You can point lights at the ceiling and light the whole place. It's very cheap and you can use dry-erase markers on it to take notes, draw out ideas , keep lists etc...

We have a 20 X 20 screen room out our back door - it has osb on the ceiling with high gloss marine poly on it - everyone comments how good it looks. That's a high moisture area - particularly now with our spa in there - but it's held up very well for over 20 years.

Buck,

I have no idea of the price. I saw the stuff on a friend of mines milking parlor and thought it work nicely for certain situations. The ability to wash it etc.

It's not the best for attaching shelving but I never attach shelving anyway. I always build mine freestanding so I can move them and rearrange an area if need be.

T-111 exterior plywood siding has worked well for us in the past on the inside of garage projects. It finishes better then OSB and is probably a bit more durable. Normally used drywall on the ceilings.

Good Luck

One thing to consider is putting a band of plywood (or other material) around the bottom 3'-4' of the building and then stepping down to a thinner, less durable material for the remainder.
I put 8" car siding on the walls of my shop, and really like the appearance. Probably not be practical (cost and labor to install) for your large shop - but may look nice along the bottom couple feet of wall.

I think the cream of the crop for strength, appearance, and durability would be 3/4" pine tongue and groove siding. I forget the widths it comes in,,, probably 6" and/or 8". Prime and paint with good extrior latex with plenty of mildewcide additive. It's washable, of course.

My second choice would be exterior ply, at least 3/8" thick and 5/8" thick at most, according to budget.

A great look I have seen was a 2 car garage finished with 1/4" luan ply, then topped with cheap vinyl siding. (since it gets no sunlight). It looked super, and is washable.

I never did like stuff hanging on the walls. I like free-standing shelf units and cabinets, all on casters.

That sounds like a great "tractor shed" you built there. Pictures please! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
