I think a lot also look at it that a person's time to do something for themselves is ultimately free. Unless they asked you to devote time building it specifically for them the way they wanted, most aren't going to offer you anything for your time. Many would view the good you got out of it before upgrading as the value you received for your time in making it (your tractor stayed rubber side down and you lived to tell the tale). The way the average person will see it is; you did it for yourself to your specs for labor that cost you nothing financially, you got your uses out of it, and now you are just trying to recover some of what you actually financially invested into it. If you didn't pay anything for the time to make it, neither will they.
