spring is coming (the optimist in me) and i want to start my homework on attachments. have a bx, and want to know if i'm limited to sub compact sized attachments?
for instance, how does one differentiate between them and standard sized attachments (box blades, tillers, landscape rakes). when looking at specifications, the attachments for the subcompacts are invariably LIGHTER, and that isn't always a good thing. (i could be wrong, but am here to get my education) . . . i will go sit in the front row, near the whiteboard/for explanation purposes . . . dunce cap will be nearby , should i need to wear it
thanks for everyone's time and attention. shrekbelly

The manual for your BX should have a chart with recommended implement sizes. Sometimes they are a bit conservative. Look around on these forums to see what folks with your tractor model are using successfully. What I've read over and over with the subcompacts is that you can do everything you can do with a bigger machine, it will just take a bit longer. Having said that, I wouldn't assume bigger and heavier implements will work. For instance I know that the shafts on some subsoilers are just too long for the B and BX series, even though they are Cat 1.

For my BX2350, I use the following:

King Kutter (yellow) 5' cat 1 back blade. The lower mounting pins on the blade had to be turned to the inside as the lower 3PH arms couldn't quite stretch wide enough.

King Kutter (yellow) 4' cat 1 box blade. The lower mounting pins were left pointing outwards and I don't have much problem getting the 3PH arms to fit.

King Kutter (orange) 5' XB landscape rake Just picked it up so no idea on fit issues. The XB series is considered a smaller Cat 1 specifically made for our machines.

Farm King 5' cat 1 rear snow blower. The lower mounting pins were left pointing outwards.

With any of these implements, I have no problem getting enough lift. Apparently this was an issue with older BX models where the 3PH arms did not lift as high.

You will need to do your research before you buy. Landscape rakes are not a bug deal because you can turn the pins in. I have a 6' Woods rake on my BX2350 and it handles it nicely. But other thing like single bottom plow that I have will not fit well or at all. As for tillers I have an older sleeve hitch type that I converted into a TPH. But if I was going to replace it I would look at the XB line! Just nice when something is made to fit and it is even more important when you are using a pto shaft!;)

To big of a boxblade and landscape rake will stop you in tough ground and the tractor will just sit there and spin. As stated the XB stuff is made for the BX. If your going downhill you can pull something bigger than uphill and on level ground with good grip something of a different size. So it gets back again to the depends on your ground in several cases. My BX2200 would stumble and struggle using some of the implements that the B7800 pulled like they weren't even there. The BX did pull them but it was a struggle. I don't have that level golf green property. Hilly and some rocks. As BDooner also stated. Some times on a hill I couldn't get my landscape rake up high enough to get it off the ground because of the hill slope. I have a 6' landscape rake and I think it is to big for a BX.

The biggest difference you will notice is ground clearance. You may not be able to lift the implements as high, but from what I've read and understand you can basically use any implement within reason and your BX will have little or no problem at all.Good luck.

I have a KK 48'' tiller for my Bx1500 and Bx23.

I have a BX2660, which is admittedly the "big" BX, but I haven't had any problem with generously sized implements. I have a 48" Landpride rotary cutter that cuts through anything I feed it without a even a moan from the BX. I also have a 72" Landpride tilting rear blade that I use for snow and gravel. Again, no problems in terms of traction or power. I should have my 48" Landpride box scraper (the heavier 1548, not the lightweight 0548) in the next week or so. I don't forsee any limitations with it either.

In each of these cases, the size of the implement is a bit larger than those speced by Kubota. I don't have the challenges of long, steep hills on my property, but otherwise, I make everything work hard, and so far, with no complaints.

Shrekbelly, you still haven't completed your profile and you didn't say which BX you have. If I remember, correctly you bought a new 1850 or 1860 a few months ago... It makes a difference as the later models have a different 3 pt hitch than the earlier models. The 50 and 60 series and BX24, 25 and have a full Cat 1 hitch that lifts higher than the earlier models. As Korydz said, in most cases you should be able to use the full size implements if you have a late model machine. Keep in mind the lift capacity is rated at around 650 lbs. Also, the tires on the 1850/60 are smaller than the 2350/ 2660 so it will have 1" less overall lift height.

For my BX2230 I have a Tebbens 48" rotary cutter, and this box blade which probably weighs 450 lbs. As heavy as it is, I keep the loader on the front as ballast and it handles it just fine.

One must remember the subcuts have a shorter footprint and some attachments can prove difficult to mount. I am a firm believer that the moderate implement ratings in the Kubota manual are underrated capacities to discourage liability and make significant assertions to wards the lighter weight.

Tractor safely!:)
