Greasing my drive shaft (engine to tranny) on the weekend and decide to remove the shaft completely instead of greasing it in place like I usually do. The reason is I always had some up and down movement on the yoke which slides on the tranny shaft. So I decided to have a closer look and this is what I found. I don't even know if it has anything to do with the up and down free play that I have, for all I know maybe the free play is normal, but nevertheless, this is the first time I see something like this and it doesn't seem to be broken off, just missing. I put it back together an waiting for the JD service manager to return my call. Has anyone seen this before?

Usually when a spline is missing like that, it is to index it onto a shaft. Your shaft might not have it as the yoke could be used for other applications. In the case where it is needed the shaft will be missing a groove, and that is where the missing spline slides over.

Yes, that would make sense.
