I’ve pretty much figured Amazon lowered the price of the product for everyone. It started at $145 and is now $110. I had someone else check. Now did this happen because I was ordering from somewhere else at $110? Do they have automatic programs that search for items on the internet at higher or lower prices? I don’t know.

So I was shopping for a stand for my bench grinder stand on Amazon, we are prime members. Found one I liked and the wife said search other places. Generally the prices were about the same except Home Depot had the same unit for about $35 less. This entire time I had the Amazon page open comparing specs to make sure it was the same. I ordered from Home Depot shipped to my front door. I go to close out the Amazon page and it suddenly it shows a 13% discount. It lowered the price about $20. It was still cheaper at Home Depot but by only $15 now.

So I know Amazon plays some games with prices even during the same day. Can they detect I have that page open for period of time and assume I’m price shopping? Can they actually see I’m shopping on other web sites? Did it just happen to change in the 30 minutes I had the Amazon page open?
Yes they can see if you are shopping and what you are shopping for in real time. ..Ever notice how you look for something online and the next thing you know you are getting spammed with adds to buy that item ? .. Amazon and other companies pay to get search data in any specific area.. Then can then bomb you with adds ..and yes even bump prices up at will. Trust me, they have departments dedicated to establishing buying patters of people, They know how many times someone shops before buying, etc..

Didn't prime go up to something like $179/yr. recently? Don't order enough to make that worthwhile.
If you pay by the month, the cost is $14.99. If you do that for 12 months, the total is $179.88.
If you pay by the year, the cost is $139 or $11.58 per month.

Like everything on the internet, prices at Amazon vary by the moment. They have a very complex algorithm based on your web browser history, what you have looked at, what you have bought in the past, what you bought from other vendors, and what people with a history/profile similar to yours have bought.

The longer you let it track you the more reliable it becomes at predicting you.

Years ago when I first used Amazon, I bought a large set of vise grip pliers, to hold things when welding, and some supplies for the plasma cutter, and little wire feed welder. Every time I logged in to my account, I got a bunch of recommendations for locking pliers, and welding supplies. Which of course I didn’t need, because I had already bought them. As I have continued to buy things from them their recommendations have gotten better.

Wait - are you saying they changed the price on you WHILE you were pumping gas? And it didn't let you finish at the original price?
Yes, you understand that correctly. The pump was reset when they changed the price, up to that point was the old price, then I had to run my card again to finish at the higher price.

I always wondered why every time I look on Amazon for tools I get pop up ads for bras!
