Nothing like eating what is in season from your garden or what is available locally.

 Truer words were never spoken. (written)

I'm not 'black catting' you Mate, but a Tassie Southern Rock Lobster (a non-clawed species) is going for A$110 a kilo!!!

I had to look this one up. Your Welcome. :)

black-catting
To always try to trump someone else in a conversation.
An example of black-catting is "I have a black cat."
"Yeah, well my black cat is blacker than yours."

About the same time the retail price of "claws" were $12-$15/pound...we could buy 8 oz. Australian Rock tails (imported fresh) for about $20.00...lately I have not seen them in the local markets...

Commercial shrimp boats usually go out for several days at a time before they bring their catch back to the docks so they have to use a preservative on the shrimp that they keep iced down. People with a sensitive smell or taste will not like these shrimp as much as fresh ones. In our area there are a lot of fishermen who go shrimping in their small boats for a few hours then return with fresh shrimp that you can buy from them if you are lucky enough to know them and there are a few small seafood dealers who sell their shrimp also.

I always send my wife to buy fresh shrimp because she can instantly tell which ones used the preservatives by smell, which I am unable to do. Even when we go to a restaurant and buy a shrimp dish she is able to smell if it had preservatives or not and will not eat those that are not fresh. We are lucky here to have many small restaurants that just use the fresh shrimp unlike the major chains that are unable to do so. I am blessed (cursed) with the fact that my taste and smell is not as sensitive as it used to be and I am unable to tell the difference in most cases and can enjoy my meal even if it is not cooked to perfection.

And I am blessed with the fact that my wife is such a great cook that her gumbo will put to shame the gumbo served in the best restaurants in town.

There are two lobsters here, the southern rock lobster and the painted, the latter is cheaper and inferior in taste and texture, they come from warmer waters.
Mrs will eat the cheaper one reluctantly, they cost about$50 kg as opposed to $180, I may have to take up diving again as there is a spot near us where they are abundant....... along with sharks.

I don't know how anyone can eat lobsters, they have the best right here and I still dislike them, shrimp, same thing no good, clams are nothing but a slimy water filter.. Fish is all I will eat that comes out of the water.. I'm a Beef guy..

The french used to feed lobster to prisoners as it was considered unfit for human consumption, my thoughts too.
I dislike seafood in general.
