Seems like they found a loophole /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I can understand their situation, without the corn they would be in real trouble....now justifying a cell phone?

I guess it is amazing that they have remained so true to their beliefs for so long. I supose a certain ammount of change has got to creep in.

Heehaw, they don't appear to have problems with using IC engines to do work. They don't drive vehicles though, except in a few isolated cases. It's difficult to understand some of their reasoning, the root of which is a determination of how "worldly" a certain thing is. They have a problem with being connected to "the world" through power lines running into their properties, but may have generators and make their own power on site. They don't drive vehicles, but they pay "english" (non-Amish) people to drive them around. They are very religious, but there's a window for their young people growing up when a blind eye is turned for booze parties at the local quarry. Some of the boys might have a car they keep hidden during the "wild oats" period.

There are some other interesting religious groups that are mistaken for Amish, who are not as resistant to modern things, but also have some strange (to the outsider) practices. For example, it's OK to have a car as long as it is black in color for some. Some believe all the chrome on the black car must be painted black. Some believe it's allright to use a tractor as long as it has steel wheels.

For the most part, these people are all civic-minded and hard working. In some areas they are the real backbone of volunteer fire companies and the like.............chim

Chim: a Mennonite friend told me the kids drive Mustangs and Firebirds, but they must be black.

good joke!

We have a lot of Amish looking people (Amish, Mennonites, German-Baptists, etc.) around where we live. There are lots of sects. Even the ones who run the buggys to town may use tractors on the fields or in the barn yards. Good people to work with and just good people in general. At a local gym there have been girls working out in bonnets and flower dresses in the aerobics class.

Sarah, an Amish neighbor lady was headed back to the farm last Tuesday and was stopped by a PA State Cop. She knew she wasn't speeding, and asked the officer what the problem was. He said since it was dusk, she should have the lights on. She promised to have Jacob, her husband of many years check the battery and connections when she got home. While they were talking, he noticed one of the reins had gotten wrapped around the horse's "private parts". The officer, not being quite sure how to address the problem, told Sarah she'd best have Jacob "have a look at that", pointing to the problem.

When Sarah pulled the carraige up to the barn, Jacob came out to greet her. She told Jacob about being pulled over by the trooper, and that he needed to get the lights working again. Jacob asked her if the officer found any other problems, and she said "Yes, as a matter of fact, he thought there might be something wrong with the emergency brake"..........................chim
