Mike and oil enthusiasts,
Hi, I was just looking at prices for Amsoil and noticed the Amsoil SAE 30 Synthetic Diesel Oil. At 21 bucks a gallon, it seems a way to use very good oil and a lower price. What would be the difference in this vs. the 15W40? I'm largely a warm weather tractor user. Starting it in the 30's would be a cold start for me.
thanks, Brett

15w-40 would have a better add package. I would get the 15w-40. I use that specific oil.

Mike,
Do you think Red Line is a better than Amsoil? Just costs too much more that Amsoil? I remember a post saying it was incredibly sticky on the metal. Fact is, I NEVER want to replace this tractor, it just costs to much. I want the very best oil money can buy. thanks, brett

Redline and Amosil are very very close. Do I think Redline is better? It is too close to call. There oils anaysis are again, very close here. Redline is a group 5 while Amsoil is a group 4/5. Both are great oils but Amsoil is cheaper and can go longer based on Redline instructions (below).

Redline says, “We recommend draining the oil between 12,000 and 18,000 miles for city” and “…considerable stop-and-go driving is involved, 10,000-12,000 mile drains are suggested.” So for this reason also I use Amsoil.

I would look at this site. Mike provided it. However, the information there is much more broad based. It isn't one sided. Many guys there recommend dino oil for the break-in period. Many recommend it for break-in period for the vehicles too. There are also many more recommendations other than amsoil. In most of the posts you won't find the hostility that goes around here as much. Alot of the guys actually said the dino was fine too. Anyway you will find a more "rounded" answer than what we're getting here. It is a good site. However, if you are looking for black and white scientific info. it's pretty much the same as here. Anytime one test says the other is better the other people come on and say how the test was flawed. But it is a good oil site and there is some good information there.

I am not one sided here. Just show me a group 3 oil that protects better.

So even though my manual states ZERO on break in oil???? hmmm

True but is not any group 3’s like Rotella either. You have to go up, not down!

Hostility???? As I have stated time and time again, show me some oil tests after the same XX miles that a group 3 performs better. That is all. No “Hostility”...Hostility LOL

Never stated dino was not good just that why not raise the “bar” when you spend thousand on a tractor.

I am a well-diversified person but just show how a now synthetic, a real one, is better???

Mike there are several posts on the site you gave that show just as good of protection with group 3. There are also several posts and articles that show the amsoil 4 ball testing is seriously flawed as well. I'll leave it at that. If you guys want to see unbiased info. and some guys that really know oil and aren't going to be hostile about it go to the site mentioned.

Again I am not biased at all and I am not hostile about it. Just that a group 3 does not have the adds like a 4/5.

And personally I do not like the attitude about it since it is against TBN policy #1. This is supposted to be a place to talk and keep it family orientated. Not be "abused" or "harassed" with comments from others.
