"An Englishman's home is his castle"

Ah, the agrarian myth. Everyone wants to live on a farm until they are awakened by the cock's crow and have to smell manure.
I would much rather live next to a farm, which I do, listen to roosters, horses, cattle and donkeys, and smell manure when the farmer spreads it on the field across from my house than have more neighbors.

I miss hearing a rooster crow. My last one made the mistake of attacking me, and lost his head over the ordeal. In an urban setting though, I can see where they can be annoying; especially a young one who is just learning to crow. It's like listening to your neighbor's dog bark all night long...

In the city it is permissable to keep max of 6 hens but roosters... provided no complaints.

One of the chicks turned out to be a rooster and crowed every morning and a very nice guy... followed us kids around like a dog...

Crowing bothered dad and that was it...

In the next couple of weeks neighbors said they hadn't heard Charlie and hoped nothing happened to him...

I stayed in a bed and breakfast outside the Mt. Baker National Park once. The host apologized for the donkey next door, but I loved it. That jackass would wind up at dawn to greet the day. The sound made me feel great.

Sounds like you had organic fried chicken. I remember when I was a kid, my parents had friends that lived in the city. They would buy live chickens from us occasionally to butcher. They slaughtered and processed the chickens in their basement. I often thought their basement probably looked like a crime scene.
