It's real interesting to see things like that, kinda defies logic as we think we know it. I remember the first time I saw a Harrier jet perform at an air show. To see an aerodynamic jet approach at high speed, slow to a stop, then travel in reverse is an amazing sight to me still.

Came up in a search. A friend I forwarded the second photo to (without the other photos you posted) questioned it and said it looked more like a taxi strip to him...and then I got to wondering...you know how that goes.

( Bird, it's where the pilot of the Mig-29 brings the nose up to vertical & then even further back so the tail is actually leading the aircraft, then brings it back to normal horizontal flight. I've seen it on Discovery Wings channel & it's pretty impressive. I think it may have vectored thrust. )

I think normally that manuever is reffered to as "The Cobra".

It's amazing to see.

Also it should be noted only the SU-27/37 can pull those maneuvers not the Mig.

It's been claimed the F-22 can do it, but not officailly confirmed.

Yes your right. The Su does the cobra. The Mig tailslide is somewhat similar in that the driver brings the nose up almost 90 degrees from horizontal and stall the plane. The Mig will actually slide back in reverse to just below horizontal and power is reapplied so it can fly normally. With the Su, the nose is brought up to around 100 degrees or so from horizontal, then drop the nose back to level and power is reapplied The Su and the Mig look very similar, so to the average observer probably wouldn't know the difference. Either way, it sure is a radical way to put the brakes on and let your adversary fly right by you!!!!

I don't recall either one of these planes having vectored thrust, although you could really crank a tight turn with thrust like that if you could stay awake. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Interesting landing strip pics, so thought I'd dig Here and find this one.

I visited here once and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is interested in diving (scuba), hiking, honeymooning, or just getting away from it all. Seems there are two ways onto the island, boat or small (short take off/landing type) plane.
