And now a plumbing question

I did option 4 and it works great.
Not legal in my state either, but in many it is.
All I know is that it works.
If you do it, get the AAV high, up near the countertop.

2x6 walls would be a great ideal for any plumbing on an outside wall, but I'm sure his walls are already built.

The window tells me it is an outside wall, although there is no reason 2x6 won't work on an inside wall.

Even if it is already built, he can sister 2x6 to the existing 2x4 and have plenty of room for the vent.

He is going to lose 2" of floor space -- not the biggest deal that ever came down the pike.

Generally, all plumbing walls are 2x6,double stud..but outside kitchen walls are mostly 2x4(with window centered).Furring out the wall wont help the structural value of the wall much, but could allow drilling less of the studs.Would make for a bigger sill to sit stuff on.

I agree it would also work. The question I have is that the cabinets would then be hung from the furring (probably 2x2). Would the furring be able to hold up the cabinets long term? Fill a cabinet with canned goods, and then take them out & weigh them. You can get a lot of weight in a cabinet...

My wife probably has 150 pounds of dishes in one of ours -- and nothing but boxes of cereal in another one.

To preserve the integrety of the wall, I would notch the 2x4s just enough to allow the vent to sit inside the plane of the furring.

Most of the stress put on by cabinets goes straight down, not out so furring is possible.Using screws would be best but ring shanks grip well. The main thing would be to use 2x6 lateral cabinet bracing,it would tie everything.

I'd go option #4. I've become pretty good at AAV placement. Most guys I know call them "cheeter vents." Old-timers hate em'. Guys who like to keep DIY projects simple (like me) love em'. Nice thing for me, my State recently approved them, although the cheep 3 buck hardware store jobs are not ok, gotta have a certin brand to get the ok from the man, Oakly brand I think? Good luck.

oatey.
Basically a political issue.
Plumbers don't like 'em because they are faster, therefore put thousands of plumbers out of work, who are not running vents thru the roof.
They do work.
