Another post indicated Wisconsin is darting whitetail deer with birthcontrol drugs to placate the anti-hunters at 4x the cost of just killing them. Both methods are costing the state much more in lost revenues. Every issue goes thru the cycle I guess. MikeD74T
Mike,
Where I used to live, there is a park called Coyote Hills in Fremont, CA. It sits right on the bay and is surrounded by residential homes. These homes all start at half a million dollars with allot of them going for much more than that. There is a drainage canal from the hills that goes right past it, but otherwise, the animals there are totally land locked. Mt. Lions have been seen in the canals, the park and in the salt ponds in the area.
The deer herd on the park has some control from the Mt. Lions, but since it's surrounded by homes, the Lions are removed almost as soon as they are discovered.
The deer have over populated the amount of land they have to an extreme level, but hunting is not an option. Bow hunters have been trying to volunteer for years, doe only hunts with extra fees paid have been offered, but it will never happen.
The Department of Fish and Game hired an animal capture specialist from New Zealand to come in and net the deer, then the state wildlife bioligist injected them with something that makes them sterile. There goal was to sterilize enough of the does to control the population for the next decade or so. The media was there for this, as it was front page news. Also made the headline news on the local stations. When they were done, it was told that they had succeeded in there goals and no animals were harmed. A total success in preserving the wildlife at just under a million dollars.
A buddy of mine was dating a Fish and Game Officer at the time of all this, and she was involved in whole process. According to her, they only managed to catch about a dozen deer. It takes a very long time to find and net a deer when they don't go out in the open. They also don't stick around very long when a helicopter is chasing them.
According to her, the entire thing was a stage act to placate the animal activist and enviromentalists. After everything settled down, they went to the park and killed half the animals there during the night and removed there bodies. They used spotlights and bows to keep things quiet, but people still noticed the lights. When questioned about it, they were told they were monitoring the animals to make sure they were not adversaly affected by the injections and trama from the helicopter.
Some people don't understand that too many animals with a limited amount of feed will destroy the entire herd. Nature doesn't discriminate on how many die off from starvation, and when they run out of food, they all get sick and it's not uncommon for 90 percent mortality in herds. When they stop eating enough food to stay healthy, they ALL get weak, and they ALL become susesptable to desease.
