And you thought you knew something about nails and screws!

Same here.

I don’t know where all the rumors that you shouldn’t frame with screws got started. Obviously you shouldn’t use drywall screws but any deck or structural screw is going to be far stronger.

Yes... drywall screws have little shear strength, and no pun intended... structural screws are just that; you just hit the nail on the head. (y)
Also, have you seen the new lag type screws for rafter tie ins? Really nice to hold a roof down.

The ones about 6” long and painted orange or something different?

because when screws break they let go instantly and provide no warning of failure, nails bend, and provide somewhat of a warning before failure. I have read it in a couple framing books and random places.

Only drywall screws. Any decent screw won’t break.

Sorry buddy, I have multiple snapped outdoor screws in my deck the 2nd year i built it, can't think of the brand, but the yellow and gray ones from HD and lowes. never thought i would see it.

Probably made in China... Good screws are way expensive...

Were they stainless?

Can we STOP blaming China?

Without reading what the screws are rated for it's totally a non-sequitur.

As mentioned above, there are structural screws, and structural means they're manufactured with specific metals/alloys to meet structural requirements. Screwing down deck boards isn't really "structural" in the way that framing is.

I used Simpson-specific structural screws on some floor joists and for some rafters (both different projects). A LOT easier than trying to swing a hammer in a tight space. More costly? You bet. But, having a worn out arm (of smashed hands) can be even more expensive.

I'll likely use those nifty rafter screws if I build a new house. I'd love to be able to rent one of the tools for installing them: not sure what they're called.
