Also done that Dr_Zinj,even cleaning snow off on roof ridge...felt safer no ladders sliping.

I spend a fair amount of time on a ladder.

I feel safer working out of the FEL when I can. Or even using a shorter ladder in the fel as opposed to a longer (flimsier) ladder.

Invest in better ladders!

Why? Even a lower quality 8' ladder working out of an 8' bucket is going to be more rigid than a top of the line 16' ladder. And there is a lot less risk of the bottom slipping out.

To each his own. But IMO, there is nothing wrong with working out of the loader, or out of a properly done loader/ladder setup.

Difference of opinion I guess.. And there is no "proper" loader/ladder set up in my opinion, I think OSHA agrees. Not that I really pay much attention to OSHA!

According to osha...yea

But in reality, it can be done right and result in a very stable and safe work area. Sometimes safer than just a single larger ladder IMO

Each to their own, you wouldn't catch me on a rig like that.

When I bought my present house I had the stove installer put up an external stainless steel chimney. Now all I need to do is remove the bottom cap and clean it standing with both feet on the ground, getting too old to balance at the peak of a steep roof with a chimney brush.

The professionals around here clean chimney's from the bottom. I suppose that works best with a fireplace and not a stove? Or is that otherwise not the best practice?

Problem is, with a hook, it tends to tear up the shingles as it slide up and over them. A pair of rollers bolted to a hook and angled in such a way that it rolls up the roof, but the roller don't touch it after it slips over the ridge would work nicely.

Just rotate the ladder over so the hooks aren't pointed down and it goes up the roof exactly like a ladder that doesn't have hooks.
Having the ladder extended 3-5 feet past the roof like in the picture makes it possible to use that extension to catch yourself if you slip, this could then cause the other end to pop out of the bucket and down the roof you go sliding with your ladder.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my chimney is an exterior SS and can be cleaned from the bottom. At my previous house it was possible to get the brush and rods up thru the cleanout door in the basement. Might be kind of messy if the only access is inside the house though.
