Last year I fixed about 3 major leaks, one on the engine oil pan and 3 in the hydraulics, the PS, front PTO seal and the seals in the pressure regularor valve. So now it's nearly leak free, but changing the hyd oil filter today I notice I've got a leak right under where the left drawbar arm attaches to the pivot. Only thing I can see there is the gasket for the left axle where it attaches with 300 bolts to the main frame. Is there any other place where it could be leaking in that area?

BTW, the alternator front bearing went out and started screeching, so I got a new alternator, but looking at the old one I think I'm going to try and replace the bearing, then I'll have a spare.

It sounds like you have a load control shaft seal leaking. Item 28 in diagram is the load control shaft. The left and right draft arms attach to each end of the shaft. the seals are items 4 & 5 and they fit in bushing #6. At the very least you need to replace the seals. If the shaft and bushings are worn, they need to be replaced as well to make a reliable seal.

Place L/D lever under seat in "D'' & drain trans oil before removing shaft. This is also a good time to check/clean sump screen if that task hasn't be performed lately.

Oh, wow. According to the Tech manual, the rockshaft assembly and left-hand rear axle housing has to come off. I may take it to a local guy that works on JD and have him do this and also clean out all the metal filings that are inside the trans. It looks like a little more than I want to get into at this point. I've been wanting to get it cleaned out for a while.

Thanks.

Well, the local guy doesn't want to deal with it and VA tractor wants thousands of $$$. I guess I may have to do as best as I can and see if I can work on it. I'll have to get the beam put across the barn aisle to hang the chain hoist on again. I had both axles off maybe 20 years ago to replace the brake pads. I even broke it in half once to replace the clutch back then.

I need some ideas on how to clean out the metal filings in the trans/rockshaft. I suppose I'll have to use diesel and I have an old paint setup with a compressor I could put the diesel in to put it under a bit of pressure and use an airgun. What kind of bathtub am I going to need to collect all this crap and then what do I do with it? Take it to the dump and put it in the oil bin?

The 3pt hydraulics have always not held the arms up, it always drifts down when off, but they seem to work OK. I suppose I'll need to service the rockshaft parts/seals. Any help here would be appreciated. I'm just trying to think what I need when I get started on this project and I should prolly do it now rather than wait until it gets cold. Can't believe it's already Sept. I also have a guy that comes once a week for general work around the place that may be able to help me with things that I can't do alone. But the first thing is to get the chain hoist working to remove the axle/rear wheel and a jack/blocks to hold up the rear of the tractor. This is going to be a fair project for me at my age.

As to the filings, I'd just let the screen collect them and otherwise not mess with them. Go after the seals that appear to be leaking. Wish you well and plan carefully.

Well, reading about servicing the rockshaft and it's associated parts in the tech manual looks like a weeks project. I may dig into the rockshaft cylinder and see if I can get new seals and o-rings. As far as the filings, when I had the PS cover off the right side, I could see at least 1/2" of filings piled up on the inside, so there's a lot of metal in there. Maybe I'll do a cursory cleaning as far as I can accomplish. I hope I don't get in over my head. I'll try to get all the parts I think I'll need before I break into it.

What concerns me is I've replaced the hydraulic pump once about 20 years ago and after I replaced the alternator recently and the alternator knocking noised (bearing) disappeared, new noises showed up that appear to be from the hydraulic pump. The longer I run the tractor the noisier it gets. Last time it took about 2 hours to get real noisy mowing with the 7' NH sickle bar which is a pretty low load. I run it in 5th gear at about 1500 rpm to mow. I can cover about 5 acres in 2 hours that way, but the land here is hilly and real chopped up with trees a stream and a very uneven shaped fields so it's not a straight mowing job. The fields have never looked so good since animals are off the fields and I mow it 3 times a year now. A lot of the weeds are disappearing and the grass is taking over, even if some of it is broomsage.

Are you referring to a JD tech manual or I&T manual? One doesn't need to R&R rockshaft or remove axle housing to replace L/D shaft seals """BUT""" if you see metal filings 1/2'' deep it sounds as if brake pads are gone which needs to be corrected ASAP... With 1/2'' metal filings it's no surprise to me that frt hyd pump is making noise.

I agree, with all of Jim's thoughts on this.

1/2"
