i'd look at somthing other than gap for the rough idle

choke help any?

any leakage on the secondary wires.. view at night?

spark plugs look good?

any cyl makemore of a difference or no difference, than the others if you unplug one at a time?

The plugs are new and i checked them for cracks in porcelain or other damage. I shut the barn lights off to see if there was any arching. I found none. I had to come in and wasnt able to go further. The rough idle did not occur before the rewire and tune up. It sounds like it has a hot cam in it and clears up around 1/2 throttle. I verified all plug wires are in the right location also. Yesterday i removed the air intake and verified the choke was opening and closing as it should. I will be in the barn all day tomorrow reassembling a 283 for a friend and will dig some more. Thanks for the help and patience as i figure things out.

Found it this morning. The #2 plug had a very weak spark compared to the other 3. I swapped plugs and no difference. I swapped out the plug wire and idle smoothed out. In my past experience, i had plug wires break down at higher rpm, not idle. When i checked plugs and wires yesterday, the rough idle always worsened when removing wires. Replaced the wire and so far so good. I will update on any changes. Thinking about painting it this fall. Will definitely have questions about that. The last paint job was rattle can, would like to do a more permanent job this time.

painting and prep are easy.. time consuming.. but easy.

I spend more time prepping for paint than fixing a machine up to get it ready to be painted. and then painting itself, if weather is good, can be 1-2 days depending upon machine..

I am thinking of using a rust oleum type product or something with good durability. The tractor is used a few times a year, mainly for dragging the horse arena and covering rye grass seed. I am looking for a durable paint but not too expensive. Iirc, napa has a few good choices that are relatively inexpensive.

origina;;y I'd have said valspar.. but since tsc stopped carrying it.. hard to find.

nason at carquest is next cheapest usually.. takes different reducer though
