The topic/main subject of this is not in any way accusing Egon of anything...just trying to get his attention on where were left off in the closed thread...

The recent Climate intensity thread in the snow removal forum was closed because someone went over the top with partisan political rhetoric...Yes the thread topic pushed the window on tolerable discussions that have political overtones... But it's too bad it had to be closed...since the AGW concept has been facing increased amount of scrutiny of late...and rightfully so...

@Egon...

To carry on...

Well, for starters ice ages keep getting mentioned. During these periods there is a very large acumulation of ice. How does this ice keep accumulating if the temperatures are below freezing? That is the question!

You do not have to go into the making of a glacier. That I found out about more than fifty years ago. By the way you seem to have forgotten there is a triple point for the state of many solids, fluids and vapours. All phase changes are dependant on pressure and temperature in basic formulation.

The link I posted about glaciers explains about layers of snow compressing the layers below and the crystalline properties under pressure etc..

As for the states of matter...Here on earth I think we are aware of 4 states...Solid, Liguid, Gas, and Plasma...
perhaps I have not kept up enough on the topic?...

Now that brings up another possibility that there are other more impressive states that could possibly lead to the types of discoveries that might revolutionize the portable energy issues talked about in the EV threads etc..

Now a question for you...Does dark matter have the same states?

Yea, didn't see that coming.

Sad, people can't think more for themselves and state their own opinions, ideas and observations.

We'll get over it...post and learn...it's just there was some unfinished side discussions...

That was just a general observation. Not specific to that thread.

If someone wants to discuss, argue or debate with me, it's just nice if I get the impression that they are at least a thinking entity. Just reciting anothers opinion, data, research, whatever, doesn't impress me much.

And, threads like that are NEVER finished! Probably why they get closed.

Agree...threads that "have run their course" just quit getting posted to...and don't stay on the first page of recent posts...

Now what did I do? Unfinished business, dark matter? I don't know anything about Dark Matter and I doubt if very few people do.

And like I said, on the formation of Glacier Ice, that process I've known about for over fifty years. Heck, I can even dig down into recent snowfall and make a good guess on the stability of the snowpack.

Now back to the original issue; what type of climatic conditions must exist for glacier's to form and increase in size??

First...You didn't do anything...(see the caveat at the top of the OP)

Second...you brought up the state(s) of matter...I just expanded your question after answering it...

Third...Now you have changed horses in the middle of the stream...first you asked about ice accumulation in below freezing conditions...and said you didn't care about glacier formation...now you are asking about climatic conditions for glaciers to form and grow...

...sorry to confuse you...

My guess is snow, below freezing and time. Also suspect that if it gets to cold the snow will not compress enough to form ice but no clue on what the temperature range for this would be.

Just off the top - I'd say it must be cold and must snow. Put another way - winter time on the glacier must be greater( greater time, greater cold) than summer time. I know there are very specific terms to describe all this - but I'm not that familiar with them.

It would seem that right now a lot of glaciers are getting more summer warmth than winter cold & snow.
