Tell Jenny the dogs are fine. In fact, the neighbors' Husky/wolf mutt has adopted us and spends most of his time with us as well. So with Harley and now Todd, that makes six large dogs.
It's funny to watch them during the construction. Molson is protective, so while he likes the helpers he is determined to keep an eye on them. So he lays at the base of whichever ladder is in use, forcing the poor guys to step over and around him. Harley, who was nearly starved to death before we got him, is a real food hound...and since he knows the guys have food he is constantly underfoot waiting to be fed!
And with that shop so well insulated, of course, given half a chance all six dogs will go inside to lay around the woodstove!
In answer to your question...no, this is not a normal year. In a typical winter we might see a week total with days where the high never reaches zero. But it's usually just minus a few degrees. This high of minus 15 and low of minus 30 or so for a couple of weeks is breaking records!
But it has its advantages. A few days ago we hit four above zero and it felt positively pleasant! A veritable heat wave!
