Along with why to wear a seat belt. It is a good idea to walk first property that you do not have previous experience with. May not have seen the stump, but then again he may have.

I'm not down playing seatbelt use I always use it on the small forklifts at work because it makes me feel safe although it never crosses my mind in the big cabed tractors .My question is how darn fast do you guys mow ? I use a 434IH on a 5' mower and second is fast enough to cut clean and I'm sure most of you are in areas with much heavier growth than our average.

Probably it wouldn't hurt in a cabbed tractor either...

Mostly 3rd unless I'm trimming around some kind of structure, but there are some smooth places I can hang 4th and cover some ground.

My condolences to his Family. Just a thought? When my Father taught us to drive the truck and tractor, he made us put on the seat belt. He also told us to always carry a pocket knife. He told me a story involving a friend of his, that died in a vehicular accident and had perished in the resulting fire because his seal belt was caught. Even today whenever I get in a vehicle to drive, I automatically put on my seat belt. The same when I get on the Tractor.

My first showroom new car (a 1962 Austin Healy Sprite) came without seatbelts, but we sold after market seat belts in Dad's auto parts store, so I installed them myself in that little car and have been wearing seat belts ever since, so when I bought my Kubotas it was just natural to buckle up every time I got on one.
I had a 1964 Austin Healy 3000. I bought it used in 1973 and it had a 6-cylinder with twin carbs. It was what I would call a "Mountain Car". It really took the curves and ran like a scared chicken when it was tuned correctly.

In my job I have had to investigate way too many fatal accidents and in only one case did the operator involved have his seatbelt fastened. I've learned to calculate the speed a machine was traveling from the point of the accident to where the body landed. I've photographed the blood, hair and tissue on the ROPS canopy where it caught the unbelted operator's head in an otherwise easily survivable accident. I always knew what DOA meant but an Oklahoma State Trooper had to explain to me that DRT means Dead Right There when an operator fell off his seat and was run over by a pad foot roller. Everybody has to die sometime but why not belt in and make it later rather than sooner.

I use them in the cab tractors and have taught my grandson to do it as well. A few years back I believed I was safe in a cab ... I was looking back on the right side and hit a good old hole in the ground and the impact slammed my head against the window ... almost knocked me out and I was surprized the window didn't break.

A friend told me once about his dad running a road patrol in winter time to clear off the municipal roads. He wasn't wearing the harness and didn't have any problems until he hit a good sized hard snow drift. He stayed moving straight ahead, but the grader was shoved sideways quite violently. He said his dad was darn near knocked out when the cab slammed into him. He wore the harness after that...:D

Didn't really give it much thought till now, I have a cab tractor and have not buckled up but I can change if I have to, I guess.

Thanks for the shared experience I will be buckling up now.
