So,this is just and FYI. I decided to replace my intake hose (out of the filter to the tram). I ran down to Napa as it is local, but for a single short hose it did not make sense to drive 20 miles to the shop I think is much better.

Well, NAPA uses a different sort of fitting. One that is flared at the end around the hose and gold in color (Wayne County, you will know the names). Anyway, I got the $50 hose home and of course it would not fit. That extra 3.4" made it impossible to bend the hose enough to attach.

So off to the good store and it was only $30 but I spent a bit more in gas as my hoopedy pickup only gets 7 MPG. ($20 in gas I am guessing). Their hoses have the similar silver connector.

So a big heads up to those who are thinking of swapping out hoses. This also caught me around the front wheel motors as the flares bound things up a bit.

I just figured this was a good place to state that I blew out a steering hose today, and sprayed hydraulic all over someones driveway, I just pressure washed that driveway the other day. The oil looked pretty clean. I guess it was just due to age, It burst right before the fitting that goes to the line that splits off to the two steering cylinders. Should not be difficult to change, I may have a hose that would work. I believe my 1445 is an early 90's. I have had pretty good luck with it so far.

Carl, many Napa's use Weatherhead hose and fittings, some switched over to Gates. You described a Weatherhead crimp perfectly. Now here's the kicker, from the other hose shop, this could be a new style Weatherhead. Or, a Gates, Parker, Aeroquip, etc. Do me a favor and post the part #'s off both bills so I can id the manufacturer. Prices would be nice too, I like to see how much they charge at other shops.

Now, sorry to tell you this Carl, but if the first crimp fitting was too long, so is the second. The bend in a hose should start at a length from the end of the crimp equal to 1.5x the diameter of the hose. So, if the hose is 1" in diameter, the bend should start a minimum of 1.5" from the end of the crimp. This 1.5x rule is not the hose size, but the actual o.d. of the hose. You really want to figure out a way to install an angled fitting to relieve the stress on the hose. They have this 1.5x rule for this reason. When you take a hose from 0 psi to whatever the operating psi is, the hose tries to straighten itself. So, the hose flexes and if you have the bend starting too close to the crimp, the hose rubs on the crimp fitting internally and externally causing premature failure. It actually breaks the wire braids internally. If you can post a good pic of the hose where it connects, maybe I can help you figure somethiong out. By the way, did the original hose fail at the bend in question?

WCH.

I am no where near my PT nor my receipts. Really sorry. But when I get back I will get you the info.

As for this hose, I am not sure if it failed or something else was going on. I had a slight leak in the area, and decided to replace the hose cause it was hard as a rock. I have 3 hoses left that are like concrete. When I unbend those that were similar the sides just crack off....

The hoses I have left are low pressure intake hoses. Not as concerned but now with the shop vac trick I can try to replace them without dealing with 20 gallons of oil..

Carl
