There should be seven relays. All are the same.

Good show on getting noise!

I am new to this forum.

Was searching for information to help me get my tractor back in action. A John Deere 4200 hst.

A few months ago the tractor started acting like it was not getting enough power to the starter. It would kick in the starter gear and give about a "half" a crank, and then stop.

Checked battery (excellent condition) then checked battery cables, no noticable corrosion on teminals or cable. Ended up taking out the starter and having it tested. Tested fine. Put it back in the tractor and it fired right up, and has been running perfectly normal ever since.

Then, about 2 weeks ago while working at another farm loading firewood, work time was over for the day and when I shut the tractor off it would not start again. Not even crank, nor kick in the starter gear.

Battery and cables all look good. Tested the seat switch & the neutral switch, which both appeared to work perfectly. Also tried "jumping" the switches. checked all the pto, gear lever, pedal and rear lift control positions.

Still no crank, nothing. Not even instrument panel lights (although the fuel guage works fine)

Only noticable sound is a little "click" on the starter switch relay on the fuse panel.

When I leave the key on for a few minutes, then the instrument panel lights come on.

The farm I am working at is being sold. Need to get tractor off property, but would like to drive it off rather than spend $$$$ winching it onto a trailer and taking it to the $$$DEALER$$$.

When I looked up a new OEM starter, just about fell over at the price. It must have been flown twice around the moon to cost that much.

Does anyone have access to owners manual they would be willing to share. PDF of copy of CD.

I have seen one on CD for $165 but that is way out of my league.

Am unemployed at this time and wood was free if I removed it. Need it for increasingly colder winters here in northern washington state.

Any help would be appreciated.

Right now I have the starter switch relay and am going to put a multi meter on it to see if its dead or alive.

Don't know where to go after that without a manual or schematics.
i had the same problems and tried same solutions a couple years. .It would not start just clck.next day it would start and run all day. this year I finally had dealer pick it up,over $500 sz bad connection at battery cables, but main event-water in hydro oil. They drained & refilled .I had noticed steering was stiff and tractor would not move then it would. result now runs ,starts but will not move in any gear steering still stiff. So very pissed off they said they will come get it asap, still waiting.what I learned some years ago was do not kick the tractor.you will just have to pay to get it fixed.
