It could very well be a relay- but I would first have you tell us how old your battery is?
Could be a marginal battery- they are particularly prone to acting up as the weather starts getting colder. You say it sits for long periods of time, with no regular use which also can kill a battery- especially if you are not using a battery tender to keep it close to full state of charge. Note I said a battery tender, NOT a trickle charger.

Post back the age and condition of your battery, and any maintenance you have done or not to same.

Thanks for the reply (I do appreciate all of the advice).

The battery is 3 months old. I replaced the one that came with the tractor (3 months ago). It was three years old and was in poor shape due to the sporatic use and temp changes/etc.

The current battery has not seen use in 40 days, but was turning the starter over without issues today. I agree with you on a battery tender and hooked one up to the tractor this afternoon.

Would a battery on the fritz cause the relay to buzz/etc. I am out of my league come electrical matters - might as well be magic.

Look at it this way: the battery is the heart of the electrical system. If it is a defective battery, for instance, then the arteries ( wiring) and valves (relays) won't function as intended; hence things like hard starting, erratic running, etc.
Now I'm not ruling out relays as being your problem, but if one changes the oil to fix a flat one still has a flat. So I would rule out the battery first by taking it to someone who can run a load test on it to make sure it is able to hold a charge when it is under a simulated load. Just because a battery is new doesn't mean it is new stock or might not have a bad cell, which will show up on a load test. What brand did you buy and is it an exact match for what was in the tractor when you replaced it? Cranking amps need to be the same and so does group number. Once the battery is known to be good you need to verify your grounds at the battery/ frame and then trace forward to the starter and relays in the starting system. Also the glow plug circuit should be functioning properly to insure the engine starts when the ambient temperature starts to drop. Concurrently, you should make sure the fuel system is not having any issues with clogged filters, contaminated fuel, etc.
That is the basics of the electrical and fuel system's tracing out to solve problems.

As a poor CK30HST owner I feel unqualified here. But wait. I am full of ideas. Spray some WD40 or better yet, plastic approved electrical cleaner, into the ignition switch.

That reminds me of what my electrician told me recently. A lake dweller,(summer person) was closing up their lake house for the winter and noticed after tripping a breaker from having used the vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, washer dryer, etc. all at once that the main breaker was smoking:confused2:
So he thought it might be dirty/dusty and decided to spray it with carb cleaner to clean it up:laughing:

Jeeze, some people never learn?! Then he leaves to return to Jersey or wherever, and leaves the place alone for 4 weeks!:confused:
Then he calls my electrician and wants him to fix it so the caretaker can use the electric to run a pump to drain the pipes. Yeah, he says, I'll rush right over and drop what I'm doing to fix this disaster?! Guy is lucky to be alive. Carb cleaner and 100+ amp main breaker do NOT play well:cool:

So after you fiddled around with the battery, it seemed marginally better for a moment??? It sounds to me like you are losing the ground on the control coil of the relay that you keep hearing buzz.
Regular analog relays can be checked by simply energizing them with 12v and ohm checking across the proper contacts according to the print on the side of the relay. Any circuit ohm'ing higher than about 2 ohm is bad. On some equipment, anything over .8ohm is bad.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - really appreciate it.

I pulled the battery and had it tested. No issues with the battery. It is also the same (cranking amps/etc) as the one that came with the tractor.

I have to head back to my permanent residence for a couple of weeks, so I will not be able to get back to the tractor for a couple weeks.

I currently have the battery hooked up to a tender and will research some of the relay/ground potential causes so I can begin to trace the issue back.

Will update the thread with what I find out.

I would think the buzzing relay is likely the one that controls the glow plugs. Usually what causes a relay to buzz is a lack of current which is often a low battery. However, since the battery turns the engine fine (a good battery load test) that is not the problem. Therefore, it is probably a poor connection somewhere in the glow plug circuit which is limiting current. The buzz occurs when there is a little current available but not enough to satisfy to load when the relay closes. The load causes the voltage to drop allowing the relay to open removing the load which then allows the voltage to increase again closing the relay again applying the load dropping the voltage etc. hence the buzz as the relay goes back and forth. The glow plugs are a big electrical load which is why I would expect this circuit. The same thing also often happens to starter circuits since starters are also a big load however, in this case the starter works fine.

If there is a poor connection limiting current flow it may get hot very quickly. Something to look for.

Right upfront I will say I am a newbie and electrical issues are not my strong suit.....

My issue is as follows: When I turn the ignition key, I get an immediate buzzing for a couple of seconds (buzz/cranking sound - which from searching posts here I believe to be the starter relay??). This sound comes in place of the "first click"

I then get the "second click" which I believe to be the glow plugs. The engine will turn over, engage and start. Once started, it will run for only about 10 seconds and then stop.

Tractor has 300 hours with no previous issues. It is garage kept and used off/on throughout the year (my rural property and home are in two different states, so it is not a daily driver).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My name is Warwick and this is the first time i've every written in on one these forums so i'm not really sure what i'm doing is right yet. But as for your starting problem you might try looking at all the electrical plugs under the left hand side of your foot area.
I own a EX45 HST here in Australia which i think maybe the same as your model. I also had a starting problem and it turned out to be corroded pin in one of electrical plugs. Daedong replace the whole wiring harness under warranty. I have seen one other EX45 here with the same problem.
